I registered here because I can't find the answer to this question anywhere. I recently purchased a samsung syncmaster 173P, its a great monitor and I love it. However I wondered as it has a dvi socket could I buy a dvi dvd player and plug it into the monitor? I heard something about HDCP or something and I don't know if this monitor would work with that? I'm asking because I heard DVI signal gives a much better DVD picture. If I can use a DVI player what player would you recommend? :dD

The question you need an aswer to is, is my monitor HDCP compliant? If not (as it may not be) you are SOL.
see this article http://www.digitalconnection.com/FAQ/HDTV_12.asp
I did some research on HDCP sometime ago and I formed the view that it was rather meaningless at least when using a DVD player as opposed to a PC. Just do a google search on HDCP.
Any dvd player is likely to be HDCP compliant. I have the Samsung HD 937 (now superceded) which outputs DVI (mated to my Samsung 61" LCD RPTV) and it puts out a superb picture. Incidentally it is cr@p via component but they got DVI right!

There is a really excellent site here Blue Jeans Cable (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/index.htm)
It explains all your questions in a meaningful and explicit way.
I particularly like the debunking of "Oxygen free cables etc.", something I have espoused ever since monster cables came into being.
There are many forms of DVI cabling, all digital ones only good for a few metres.
Check out this page: DVI (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/dvi/dvicabletypes.htm)
