I have an old set top box for a the past few years now. I occasionally have
connected this box to my SVHS video machine & been able to record the
digital signal in widescreen. Since the set top box doesn't have a timer it
means that I can only preset things to record one program this way.

Do any of the set top boxes available in OZ have a timer inbuilt? I am
also aware of a third option to record this way & that is to have the 3 in 1
set from Samsung which has a Set top box included in it's VHS DVD combo?

Thanks in advance

Quite a few boxes have timer settings in them now. The Topfield 4000T and
the cheapy DigiCrystal 8800 both do. Maybe ask at http://www.dtvforum.info.
I'd be surprised if the Teacs didn't have this so check it out.

And if it's working on the same software as the Kaon-based Strong, I
wouldn't trust it to actually fire the timers that you set.

I have a Wintal STB X5. It has a timer with 12 settings.
It works fine for me. I use the timer regularly.

I'm with you on that one! My 5290's timer recording strikerate is a joke.

That STB uses the same software that runs their X10 PVR; it's extremely
reliable.

Is there an option on the pvr-x10 to basically just record, they say for how long, ie 30 mins, 60 mins..etc. I can use the timer, and I can use the info-list--exit exit option, but you need to do this BEFORE you hit record. if I kick a record off in a hurry, i can't seem to be able to tell it to stop after a certain time.

Unfortunately, the only way to get a manually-started recording to stop is
to physically hit "stop" (or run out of hard disk space!)

The ability to set "quick timer" instant recording going is something quite
a few Wintal users are clamouring for...

Bummer !...just what I thought.

Something you would think that could be fixed with the next firmware revision.
