View Full Version : ABC2 breaking the law already?

As shown on the ABC2 website FAQ section:

Q: There's no drama, national sport, national news or current affairs and
no comedy or entertainment on ABC2. Why is that?
A: Government legislation restricts the kinds of programs that can be shown
on any additional digital channels broadcast by the ABC or SBS.
Specifically, the legislation prevents ABC2 from broadcasting drama,
national sport, national news or current affairs, comedy and entertainment.
However, there'll be plenty of other programming to keep you busy - check
the online program guide .

It can't broadcast drama? "The Tribe" seems like drama to me.. National
sport? I'm sure Western Australian Football is National Sport
(http://www.abc.net.au/tv/guide/abc2/200504/programs/SP0447W002D2042005T233000.htm),
National News? There's plenty of that. Current Affairs? Plenty of that too..
Comedy? Plenty of kids programs have comedy.. Entertainment? TV =
Entertainment..

Well..

They're just breaking everything aren't they..

Why not broadcast stuff we want instead? You've already broken the rules and
can't get into more trouble! :-)

They're allowed to show children's programmes so they can probably get away
with that.

Is that part of a national comp or just a regional one (sorry I don't follow
AFL).

> National News? There's plenty of that.

Is there? I've only seen regional news programmes (Stateline), plus short
news updates.

> Current Affairs? Plenty of that too..

As per regional news?

Children's shows.

The whole thing is farcical, so yes. Good on them for pushing the boundaries
a little... Why not make a submission to the digital TV takeup inquiry
suggesting the content restrictions be lifted?

It would be interesting to see the actual legislated list - someone did
post it on DBA but i cant remember where.

Well it stands to reason doesn't it? ABC2 can show anything they like as
long as it's not entertaining.

those laws should be scrapped immediately, and whoever implemented them deported to new zealand and force fed series 1 of "the tribe" over and over.

Australia Wide is regional news - there won't be anything about the fed govt
or anything that affects austrlia as a whole.
WAFL IS regional footy so they can show that.. once again nothing affecting
australia as a whole.
entertainment .. noun... the act of entertaining
i delved a little further:
entertain verb To hold the attention of with something amusing or diverting.
(courtesy dictionary.com)
tv is not always entertaining.

I don't know about you, but, after being force-fed advertising for so many
years on the commercial channels, I rather miss it when I watch ABC 2. Is
there any way they could show us some genteel, non-intrusive "Themed"
advertising like SBS do. ;<( (sarcasm)

Off topic.
I have literally raced down the digital TV road at the highest speed so that
I can finally control the relentless advertising that breaks the continuity
of anything that is worth watching. The more digital TV there is, the more
certain it is that the commercial TV financial model will become
unprofitable. Pay back time soon!

Which is exactly why the media lobby groups that influence the
government will ensure that it will never happen in our lifetime.

One thing that lobby groups can not do is make us watch TV. As the essential
meat in the sandwich between TV networks and the advertising industry, we
are fast becoming aware that our opinions and preferences are of no interest
to either side.
As the industry slides into the hole of indifference of its own making, It
seems I will not the be the only one saying "good riddance!"

A list that only political fuckwits could dream up.

Looks like Lateline is bending the rules quite aggressively
tho they likely would claim it qualifys as international news.

how stupid is that definition. lol i find definitions like that all over my stupid dictionary, i think its an oxford. and to make things worse, its a "pocket" dictionary that would need one of the biggest pockets in the world to hold it in
