Presumably you meant the mobile market there.

COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO HOW THOSE WHO
DONT HAVE A WORKING MOBILE USE PAYPHONES.

Anyone with a clue can make voice calls for less than
the 40c it costs on a payphone with a mobile too. That
has NOT rendered payphones unused, fuckwit.

> and SMS from payphones will be competing

Nope, just like cheaper than 40c voice calls from mobiles dont either.

> And it's checper to send an SMS from a
> mobile than one of these SMS payphones

Its cheaper to make a voice call from a mobile than a payphone
too if you have a clue about what plan to use on your mobile.

Mine generally cost about 12c per call.

> - not hard to work out what most people will do.

COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT WHAT THOSE WITH A MOBILE WILL DO.

ANYONE WITH A CLUE, WHICH OBVIOUSLY COUNTS YOU OUT, REALISES
THAT PAYPHONES AINT USED BY THOSE WITH A WORKING MOBILE
EXCEPT WHEN THEY WANT TO CONCEAL THEIR IDENTITY AND EVEN
SOMEONE AS STUPID AS YOU SHOULD HAVE NOTICED THAT THEY ARE
UNLIKELY TO CARE ABOUT THE 30c COST IN THAT PARTICULAR CASE.

Povs tend to use up their prepaid credits fairly quickly so it would be easy
for them to go around begging from the public " can you spare 30 cents for a
SMS".

Sure, thats what I meant with the use of the word 'working'

Kids too.

And while druggys may well use payphones for anonymity even when
they do have a working mobile phone, they wont give a flying red fuck
about a 30c or 40c charge for the use of the payphone for that reason.

Thank you for agreeing with me again that mobiles are being used more and
payphones less.
Still dosnt change that I said re payphones at home.

Talking about SMS here, not voice.

Not that I want to enter into a discussion about voice calls (this thread is
about SMS from payphones), I will say this and no more:

A ~20c flagfall has already used ~half the 40c payphone cost leaving only
~20c to use. Would leave only 20 seconds of talking on one of those 1c/sec
plans, or only give about 1 min talking total on iSim.

Never said any of that wasnt true, never said that no-one would use them
(but please try and point out where I did - bet you cant). If you read
slowly, you might understand what I am fkn saying:

What I said was that these SMS payphones will have a hard time in the
marketplace because of the penetration of mobiles in Australia. I dont care
what anyone says, the mobile market in Australia is already huge and
growing, and SMS are a large part of that market, and that's what these SMS
payphones will have to compete with. Compare that to the shrinking payphone
market - SMS's make up only a small part of said shrinking market.

This thread is about SMS from payphones, not voice. But:

I disagree with you on your point about local calls cheaper from mobile -
see above, but that dosnt change the fact that the mobile market is growing
and the payphone market is shrinking (which you have previlusly agreed
with).

Other than that, your agreeing with me about the payphone matket in general
and what it's up against.

Thats distinctly arguable with the pathetic povs and kids

or have the battery run flat or just have them die etc.

Its amazing the rate at which stupid kids go thru mobile handsets.

Talking about these new payphones where Telstra is spending big money to get
them. Big money in a shrinking market.

shrinking, .

Low use prepaid aint the only part of the mobile market that's growing, e.g.
capped plans.

Seperate to the cost comparison argument, people use mobiles regardless of
the cost of doing the same call from a payphone.
Thank you for pointing out that mobiles are widely used instead of
payphones - another thing I've been saying from the start.

True harder, child. You might actually manage to fool someone, sometime.

Most GSM phones these days map 000 to the standard international
emergency number: 112.

An emergency call will get through if there's enough signal (and
Timing Advance is within limits) from _any_ available carrier.
If necessary, some other call will get automatically thrown off
to give it priority access.

Many (if not all of the new phones) translate 000 into 112.

These calls get priority on the network. A call will be dropped to
have the emergency call carried. Additionally, any available network
coverage will be used to carry the call.

Thats why you use 112 instead

This is ONLY when using 112

Dont give out dangerous misinformation, please

For a number of years mobiles sold in Australia have translations for
000 to 112 programmed into the handsets.

Two seperate mechanisms are specified in the GSM standards to
treat "local" emergency numbers (000, 911, etc) as 112 calls.
The handset itself can be programmed with the translation
table, or the SIM can have up to 5 emergency numbers configured
in the EF-ECC (Emergency Call Codes) file.

Best to use 112, but there'll always be those who don't know
about it. It's increasingly the case that 000 gets treated as
a priority emergency call for them.

My phone allows 112, 000 and 911 to be dialled as "SOS" calls
even with the keypad still locked.
