I need a phone that will work in Australia, US, Europe and Japan.
My current 6230 can do all but Japan.
Any recommendations?

The 6230 is only tri-band which limits your coverage somewhat in the US.

The new Motorola V3 is quad band 850/900/1850/1900

Parts of the states are moving to 850 ive heard.

They forgot about 1800 used in parts of Australia. Some networks in
Europe are 1800 only.

Motorola C975 and A1000 from Three. Work in US (1900MHz), Australian
and Europe(900/1800MHz), Japan (2100MHz).

GSM1850 refers to GSM1800
