“A brilliant psychological thriller! The direction and performances are spectacular”
– Larry King, USA Today.
On the eve of his retirement Detective Jerry Black (Jack Nicholson) is drawn into the most horrifying crime of his life – the battered body of a little girl has been found and has all the markings of a serial killer. Black is the one chosen to tell the girl’s family of her tragic fate. He makes a promise to the parents to catch the killer no matter how long it takes and whatever the toll. This pledge will change his life forever.
To the rest of the force, a suspect is found and the case closed. But instinct tells Black that the killings have not ended. Driven to seek the truth, Black will also be driven to the point of obsession.
Where does duty end and obsession begin? And what price will this pledge exact on Black and all those around him?
Harrowing, gripping and deeply moving, THE PLEDGE is no ordinary psychological thriller, it explores terrain that other thrillers fear to tread. And it will make you witness what you dare not see.
Teaming for the second time with Jack Nicholson since his critically acclaimed 'The Crossing Guard', director Sean Penn has assembled a superb ensemble cast (Benicio Del Toro, Aaron Eckhart, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn, Vanessa Redgrave and Sam Shepard) to create one of the most strikingly original and emotionally powerful thrillers of our time.

AUDIO/VISUAL

The Pledge has a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track.
I felt that the audio was mostly coming from the front sound stage with speech being very audible and showing no signs of lip synch problems.
There was some infrequent and minor support from the rears, offering the occasion rear effect and ambient sound but that was about it. The sub was also used sparingly in this movie.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is more than acceptable, but nothing to give your system a real workout.
The Pledge is presented in an aspect of 2.35:1 widescreen and is 16:9 enhanced. The thing I think I noticed most about the video transfer of the DVD is that although the colours are fine, they do seem to have a kind of dark and slightly murky feel to them. This was obviously intentional and it fits in very well with the dark feeling of the movie. Flesh tones and blacks also had this feel to them, but again, they suited the feeling of the movie.
The quality of the picture was fine with no signs of marks, scratches and blemishes, and there was just the very finest of fine grain in some scenes, but nothing to be concerned about.

The Pledge is a very entertaining thriller and Jack Nicholson does a great job of portraying the obsessed cop who's on the eve of his retirement.
The support cast also do a fine job in this movie and do recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good thriller.
The audio/visual quality of the DVD are another good aspect of this DVD and although the extra features are pretty light, the biographies section does offer some detailed information.
