Hello,
I'm one of those people who didn't notice the 7 network go down the
other night..
Is it an indictment on me or what the 7 network had on at the time that
so many seemed not to notice? :)
It was Blue Heelers that was interrupted, right?

You're probably reading the wrong NG for this topic - it has been flayed to
death in AUS.TV, but as this NG is specifically for pay tv, it wouldnt have
rated a mention.
The outage was due to a power loss at Docklands (??) which caused the
nationwide blackout for supposedly 35 minutes. Seven have now accepted
their fate and are advertising a double episode of Heelers next week.
Cheers

I wouldn't have noticed if every 7 viewer hadn't rushed straight to their
PCs to create their own thread in aus.tv about it.

how is it that a power loss in one city affected all the country?
surely they weren't transmitting Blue H from melbourne accros the
country - ads for one are different - and it wasn't a live telecast -
and there was no "back shortly" announcement which surely would be
controlled from individual cities - so what is the real deal about what
happened?

Actually yes, they are. Seven's Melbourne (Docklands) studio is the hub of
all feeds to Australian capital cities.

Didn't the ratings end up showing that over 600,000 kept watching the
blank screen? Or didn't turn it off at least . . .
I suppose though, if you've only got 5 channels to choose from, a blank
screen is better than CSI: version 20 trillion on Ch9 or whatever else
the FTA channels had on.

Watched a tape of it. Prime showed 35 mins of commercials

Doesn't the code of conduct say 16 minutes maximum per hour? Somebody should
complain.

There was 'Back shortly' annoucnements or advertisiments on most
regional stations - but all the 7 network owned stations (Brisbane,
Sydney, Melbourne, Adeladie and Perth) had nothing, because everything
is handled out of Melbourne (and Sydney if Melbourne is down - but the
transfer of broadcast failed to work that night). It comes out of
Melbourne into the local city, and then beamed from there. Local city
broadcasts are beamed to Melbourne, beamed back to the city, and
transmitted over the air.
That's why early last year when Brisbane's transmitter went down, we
had nothing for 30 minutes. Then for the next 3 hours we got Channel 7
Sydney.

If you do, you'll be told to go and fuck yourself
in appropriately bureaucratic language.

According to Section 5 of the current code of practice it is.
http://www.aba.gov.au/tv/content/codes/commercial/Documents/CodeofPractice-July2004.pdf
The exact figures are detailed in S5.7
"5.7 In any hour, each licensee may (provided that the averages in Clause
5.6 are satisfied)
schedule the following amounts of non-program matter:
5.7.1 between 6.00pm and midnight outside election periods - up to 15
minutes per
hour, but with no more than 14 minutes scheduled in any four of those hours;
5.7.2 between 6.00pm and midnight in election periods - up to 15 minutes per
hour,
plus one minute per hour of non-program matter that is political matter,
provided
that the licensee supplies to Free TV Australia for public release an hourly
summary of political advertising and other non-program matter in respect of
each
day in which this additional minute has been utilised;
5.7.3 at all other times - up to 16 minutes."

Anybody who watches a blank screen for 40 minutes waiting for a TV show to
come on, doesn't really need to get a life, they should just give up now!
However there is no proof anyone actually did.
