View Full Version : PDR's with DVD?
I have a Foxtel IQ which I'm very happy with.
The only problem is it doesn't cater for FTA Ch 7,9,10 (Sat Perth)
Are there any boxes similar to IQ that will handle the other channels in a
similar way - HDD, EPG and additionally give me the ability to archive to
DVD from either box?
I've just had to buy a cheap VCR because my old one died, hoped I wouldn't
have to do that again (got a Samsung 6 head, stereo for $129 - was going to
cost me more than that to get mine repaired!)

You have a couple of options. One is a FTA STB/PVR;; however you would have to archive to DVD via a computer. The other is a digital STB plus a DVD recorder with a HDD. You input the STB through the DVD recorder, record to the hard drive, edit as desired, and archive to DVD if you want to keep it.

You can also archive to DVD from a STB/PVR connected to a DVD Recorder via RCA cables. The DVD Recorder doesn't need it's own hard drive that way so you don't need to buy an expensive one.
I have a Wintal PVR-X10 connected to a Wintal DVDR-X20 and it's it's easy to save programmes from the PVR to the DVD Recorder, in much the same way you'd connect two VCRs to copy tapes.
www.godigitaltv.tv (http://) have both of these on sale for $349 PVR and $379 DVD Recorder including delivery.

Legend is in about 1 month supposed to release a DVD player + PVR
($600-700) with all inputs, which has a removable HD which can go straight
into your PC. If you mainly watch cabe, set top boxes are not needed.
Foxtel IQ has a HD and USB but may not work ?? anyone know how to transfer
files direct to PC???P Then you can buy a DVD burner for < $100 and edit
out the ads etc then master to dvd. DVD recorders with HD are too expensive
and not as versatile

Yes, a shame. With the technology so unstable and incomplete solutions coming out from the manufacturers, I decided to get a reasonable quality, low priced set up to see me through for a couple of years until the fully integrated deal comes out and down in price a bit.
This seems like the best value for money to me at the moment. ie Digital TV in Widescreen, recorded on the hard disk and easily copied to DVD. Also the PVR box is so small the fact that they're not in the one box isn't much of a problem for me.
