Using the Foxtel Component (YUV) signal on an LG RT-42PX11
For a good quality picture on an LG RT-42PX11 you might like to try these
instructions. They probably apply equally well to other LG units such as the
RT-42PX10 RT-42PX12X etc. They also apply in part to delivering a Component
signal to other brands of plasma screens.
I will not be held liable for any errors or omissions as I am a complete
loser according to anyone who knows more than me. Do your own research and
take careful note of the criticisms levelled by the hordes of manic
depressives lining up to reply to this article.
My situation is that I have a Foxtel satellite connection and a Foxtel
digital (PACE) stb.
For an inferior quality picture you might like to investigate these options:
- Composite (really crappy)
- S-Video (so so)
Otherwise...
1.
Buy a WQ7255 SCART-RGB Interconnect cable (Part WQ7255) from JAYCAR
Electronics. It will set you back a tad under $40.
Don't be confused by the "RGB" in the name. Component and RGB signals are
quite different, but they are carried by the same pins on the SCART
connector(s) at the rear of the Foxtel stb and therefore they can be
considered, for this discussion, to use the same "hardware". The WQ7255
cable can be used equally well for RGB and Component signals. The Jaycar
salesperson that I rang in Adelaide told me that this product can't be used
for Component signals, but further research on my behalf left me guessing
that he was wrong. Don't be confused either that there is a 15-pin RGB
connector at the back of the TV. Ignore it unless you are prepared to spend
a lot more money for a device which needs to be plugged in and turned on
whenever you want to watch TV and won't give you a better picture.
There are other, similar products available to convert a signal from a SCART
connection to something that we can actually make use of in Australia, such
as the P6676 from DSE, but it is more of a box than a cable, which was not
terribly helpful in my situation because:
- I would need to buy one or more cables to plug into it before I could
actually use it.
- From what I can tell by looking at their cattledog, it doesn't include
somewhere to plug audio cables in. Oh, you want SOUND as well as PICTURE?
You'll probably have to try to extract the audio from the other SCART
connector at the back of the Foxtel stb.
Why did Foxtel choose the 21 pin SCART connections for their set top units?
Maybe they forgot that we live in Australia!
The Jaycar unit carries all of the video and sound information from the
SCART connector and does not require a separate power supply.
2.
Plug the 3 coloured plugs (red, green, blue) into the YPrPb jacks in either
the Component1 or Component2 areas at the back of the TV, matching the Red,
green and blue colours of the plugs and the jacks. The other 2 plugs carry
the audio signal and are to be plugged into the adjacent audio jacks, which
you should be able to manage by twisting the end of the cable somewhat.
3.
Download the latest firmware from Foxtel. If you need their valuable
assistance, ring 131999 for help. The firmware allows your stb to utilise
Foxtel's Component signal.
You will perform the following sequence:
ON THE STB:
Press "Back" and "Select" simultaneously and hold for 2 seconds. After you
let go the coloured lights at the front of the stb will come on (almost
immediately). When they do, press "Power" then "Up" then "Down" then "Power"
again, all in quick succession.
Wait for the firmware to download, which will probably take about 5 minutes.
4.
USING THE FOXTEL REMOTE:
Change the system settings:
Press the Setup button
System Setup (TV menu)
System Settings (TV menu)
Picture Settings (TV menu)
Set Video Output to YUV
Use your LG remote to select Component1 or Component2 and you should have a
spoofy clear picture.
I have found the picture to be quite a bit better than that provided by the
composite signal. For example, the orange logo on the Nickelodeon channel
used to flicker somewhat but now it is a joy to behold.
Enjoy!
