I have a set top box and also all of my stuff goes through a sound system. I
used to be able to switch between viewing stuff inputted from the set top
box and listening to the audio inputted from the set top box, into viewing
stuff from the set top box while listening to audio from another input on my
amp. I could do this by (obviously) changing the setting on the amp for the
sound, and also (maybe less obviously??) by changing the setting on the TV
by pressing the TV/VCR button.

I am assuming that pressing the TV/VCR button switches the input into the
telly from the yellow video cable to the antenna cable. ??

So it used to work, but I have got a (newer) second-hand VCR which is better
than the one I used to have in all but one respect: I have hooked it up
exactly the same, but now when I press the TV/Video button, I only get snow.
Before I got all of the digital channels but slightly lesser quality.

I like to monitor what's on the digital channels while listening to music on
the radio - so I can keep an eye on stuff. My old VCR is a Sharp VC-HDD and
my (new!!) VCR is a Sony SLV-X811. Do they work differently?

Anybody got a simple explanation that might help? I am not very technical
minded but I try!

thanks for reading

Yes!

VCR's have 2 outputs: RCA (little round socket, coloured yellow); and RF
(antenna socket)

New VCR's have a default RF channel that they come out on. It is Ch 39 UHF
(604.25 Mhz).

it's very likely that if you're using the STB (set top box) on RF as well,
it will also be on the RF channel 39. And when you run the two together they
collide.

The VCR/TV button on your VCR just turns the RF Channel on/off.

Three ways to remedy this
1. Read the manual for the VCR, and look for "changing the RF output
frequency"
2. Read the STB manual for "changing the RF output Frequency"
3. Utilize the RCA connections. If you can switch video through the amp use
that. or some STB's allow you to input a VCR or TV input (sometimes SCART),
and you can switch the info through. Or like wise, run the RCA out from STB
into video. And don't run the RF (antenna) through VCR.

Cheers
