View Full Version : LSK S250 Subwoofer - possible for the DIY inept?

Firstly - I have recently joined the world of AC-3 DD and am enjoying
my current 5.0 sounds, but I'm wondering whether a sub wouldnt just
give the little extra to make movies really kick-ass! I can either get
a sub now and continue with my crappy TV for a bit longer until I can
afford something decent, or I can get a replacement TV a bit sooner
and wait for the sub.

My initial thoughts are that the sub is probably the thing to get now
since TV technology is still moving fast enough for prices to drop
(and in particular an HD PVR, which is on my list of 'things to have'
once I get a decent screen!)

....anyway back to the sub:
I could go and spend $1000 on a sub, a velodyne or yamaha something
similar - but from what I'm reading an LSK S250 kit sub is a far
superior piece of kit..

I'm completely DIY inept. I can manage to assemble IKEA stuff and I'm
not worried about building the box and handling the electronics - but
sticking on veneer and not ending up with bubbles and rough edges
sounds very tricky to me! (As far as I'm concerned a 'router' is a
vital part of my home LAN, and not something for doing woodwork with!)
- Would this be biting off more than I can chew? Will I regret
spending $1000 on a failed DIY project and have the wife forever
moaning about the crappy looking shabby box that I built?

Any thoughts/experiences?

btw: My current setup
Yamaha RX-V750 AV Reciever
Sony DVP-S715 DVD player
NAD 501 CD player
Lynn Index Front L/R
Polk Audio RM40 Rear L/R
TDL ???? Centre...
TV 51cm 15yr old piece of crap

Within budget and fantastic performance.
I have had mine in use (I don't spare it) for 3 years and it is just as
sweet as ever.

I bought a Krix Seismix 3 after 3 years of 5.0 HT, thinking that my speakers
sound great, don't need a sub..... borrowed a mates for 2 weeks then went
out and bought mine.

Yes it makes a hell of a difference having that extra .1 just remember to
adjust the amp settings accordingly.

Subs are not TOO hard to build and there are a lot of kits available, after building 4 subs I am happily using a ACCUSOUND 200w sub .
It sounds good to me and did'nt cost the earth.
