View Full Version : driving interstate from Sydney

I hear about people driving interstate all the time and i'm impressed how
they know the roads so well.
Say I wanted to drive from Sydney to Canberra. How do I know which roads to
take? Do I start on King Georges road (the one that starts from
Centenary/HomeBush drive and takes you all the way to Sutherland?)
What about Sydney to Brisbane? Do I take the Pacific Highway (Lane
Cove/Artarmon) and just keep following that?
Sydney to Melbourne?

I often hear about people doing a shit.
How do they do it? Do they sit down?
Do they need a toilet?

Hmm sounds like a lot of trouble unless you have some interesting bucket
seats. Having a leak for males is quite possible, other than the trying to
fill empty stubbies method, I have seen a funnel & hose through the floor
arrangement in a Bedford trayback for long distance driving, the same
Bedford had a pair of 205 litre drums mounted on the back as long range fuel
tanks.

Take the New England from Sydney to Brisbane. The coastal route is too
stop/start.

Ever heard of something called a M - A - P ???? If you haven't ever
seen one by now you would probalby be too stupid to know how to use one
aso maybe you should consider buying a bus ticket. THeree is one other
aid to the traveller, it's beena round for over one thousand years,
it's called a S - G - N - P - O - S - T. Amzingly, I once drove from
Toowoombe to Sydney, then to Broken Hill and finally arrived in Coober
Pedy. I didn't ask for directions, I didn't use a map. I followed the
SIGNS. Piss easy to anybody with an IQ greater than 78.

With all that experience with reading maps and signposts, you can't even
recall the names of the roads.

Yeah but there's plenty of "Canberra" or "Melbourne this way" signs on
Sydney roads (although I'll grant you there probably no "Perth" ones), but
there's not many "Sutherland this way"...

Sorry, numb nuts, but where did I say anything about road names? Do try
to keep up, litle child. I don't give a shit what the road is called,
as long as it takes me where I want to go. Most of the ones I drive on
are called either bloody rough or Holy shit, when was this bastard
graded last.
?

Yeah, you litle townie kids are easy to amuse.

really?
Where?
I travelled from Brisbane to Mona Vale and back in 28 hours and there
was no stop start anywhere
with the new dual lane sections the distance and time taken is now less
than that of the New England
we left Brisbane about 8pm and arrived at the Pacific highway exit from
the Newcastle freeway(F3?) at 8am and took about 25 mins to get to Mona
Vale, only made one fuel stop at Coolangatta
left Mona Vale at 1pm and arrived at my place on the sunshine coast at
midnight, made one fuel stop somewhere near Macksville
the New England is now the prefered and recomended route for caravaners
due the larger number of trucks now using the Pacific(B-Doubles)
take the New England if you want to do a bit of sight seeing along the
way, lots more to see

to be fair
I'm buggered if I can remember the names of roads I travel all the time
the road name is only really needed when someone is giving you
directions
if the sign says "auscarsville next left" who cares what the road is
called

Can relate... The main road from the F3 to Newcastle starts off at
the F3 called "The Newcastle Link Road", then changes name to Thomas
St as it comes into Wallsend. It turns right at a roundabout into
Newcastle Rd. Between there and Newcastle, it changes name several
times until it finishes in the top of town as King St. I never
bother to remember which name starts or finishes where in the middle
as it really doesn't make any difference to where the road goes.
Patrick and his mate managed to find their way from the F3 into the
middle of Newcastle without knowing all of the street names. :-)
