What is the deal with 'tinyurl dot com' ? Does it automatically
catalogue all web pages with a redirect of it's own, or does it do it on
request to allow links to certain pages that will fit inside a line of
text?

It's on request. You supply them with a dirty big URL and hit the

....whilst allowing them to track users who click the link.

It's a data gathering mechanism, which is effectively removed by a
decent browser that is configured to strip referring off URLs. :-)
