Hi,
My 96 Pajero blows blue smoke almost every time I take off from the lights,
but once I've taken off, it goes away. Sometimes it's a huge blue cloud,
sometimes it's a little puff. I've spoken to a few different people, and
they are all telling me different things. What do you guys suggest is the
most likely cause of this?
I was thinking, (read hoping) it is valve stem seals.
The car is a 3.5 DOHC V6 on LPG.
Cheers,
Chris

valvestem seals or guides.

Not much more. To supply and fit guides on my V8 was $160. So it won't hit
you too hard if the guides are worn.

Thanks Brenden. I've had the same question on the aus.cars.offroad group for
about a week now with no replies!!
What do you think of the $880 price?

Yep, because the head needs to be removed. You don't need to remove the head
to do valve stem seals, it just takes an hour or two. How much were you
quoted for valve stem seals only?

Definitely valve stem seals but since it's on LPG I can pretty much
guarantee that the guides are worn too.

Clockmeister.

$880.00 to do that amount of work seems reasonable but with a price like
that the valve stem seals must be able to be replaced without removing
the cylinder heads.
To replace the guides the heads will need to be removed so expect a
major jump in price.
Brendens price to replace the guides must have been after the heads have
already been removed.

So this is what products such as Flash Lube are supposed to assist with?
I think I'll just get the seals done, and hope it lasts another 100
thousand, then I can get rid of it.

Well, the engine was apparently rebuilt to the tune of 9 and a half grand
about 100 thousand k's ago, so I would hope the guides would not be
completely cactus. Even if I get 50000k's, it's 18 months closer to being
able to get rid of it.
