I wasn't going to bother posting this, as I'm hopeless at describing things
in a way that allows someone to visualise what I'm talking about.
In November 2004 I managed to scam my way into clinic put on by "a car
company" at Luna Park here in Sydney (i had to say I drove a VX
Calais!!!).
I was handed a clipboard and asked to fill in the questionaire concerning
the 3 cars they had on display - a VZ Executive, BA XT, and car 'X'.
All cars were silver, had black contact over the windows and a generic
symbol covering the badges, so as to match car 'X', which was obviously a
mock-up with no real glass or interior.
I'm 99% certain that I was looking at the new Falcon. As I said my
descriptions are are going to lack flair but I assure you they're
acurate.
The first thing you notice is the convex swage line / crease that starts
at the top of the front wheel-arch, sweeps upwards as it goes towards the
rear of the body, and meets up with the trailing edge of the boot lid to
sweep around the rear. This seems to give the car quite a "wedge"-like
profile compared to the others there, both of which seemed to 'droop' at
the nose & tail when seen in profile. It looked as though, unless the rear
seat is mounted quite high, the doors will feel very high - depending on
your point of view, you'll feel either well protected or claustrophobic!
The C pillar incorporates a very pronounced 'hoffmeister kick', as seen on
every non-convertible BMW C pillar for as long as I can remember.
Finally, the headlights look to be exact copies of the latest Subaru
Liberty (the differing grill & bumper give it a diferent look/identity,
though), and the rear had a very Audi-like appearence; nothing specific,
just a similarity to the generic Audi look.
Later, we were quized by the designers for our thoughts on pictures of
various 'sports' and 'luxury' models. The former had the trademark
quad-headlight design, the latter with lashings of extra chrome! By now
most of us were refering to the 'sport' model as the XR8, designer
included.
In general, the car looked quite good without being a radical departure.
Having said that though, it didn't have the slightly menacing (maybe
that's too strong a word)look of the BA (it's hard to be objective when
you see thousands of them every day!). Also, out of the dozens of photos
we saw, only the details were different, so I'm fairly certain that the
hard points of the model we were looking at were final.

Exciting huh?

Anyone still awake?

......ok.....then I can tell you the next Magna is RWD and will have the
same alloy wheels as a BA Fairmont.......and the sport model will be
called the XR8.

Probably did this to throw off some people. There is no way it could have
been the new Falcon as it is not due until 2007.

Ford is more than a few years ahead in developing new cars. They even tell
you that during their tours of the Broadmeadows plant.

2007!!! I doubt that.
I know it was RWD as there was no way you could do a FWD with the small
overhang this car had.
There were other little clues as to the cars true identity, only
noticeable to true trainspotters like myself.
That leaves a RWD large car being developed in Australia...........choose
Falcon or Commodore.

does any one have a link to a pic?

Could it have been a Toyota? The time frame is about right for the new
model.

Looking at car release dates, 2007 is not that far away, we are ¼ way
through 2005 and by the time all testing is done, it will be well into 2006
before they make up their minds whether they release it or not, then by the
time they finally get to release the new model, it is November or December
2006 and therefore close to 2007 to be called a 2007 model, making buyers
believe they are buying a newer model than what they actually are.
It could also be a ploy by Ford to put the opposition off as to when Ford
will actually release a new model and if they say 2007, then GMH will relax
a bit in releasing their new model, then all hell breaks loose when they
both realise that they are going to release new models within a month of
each other.

I remember this article appeared not long after the clinic; there is a
similarity in the glasshouse area, but nothing else. The headlights on
this photo, however, look a lot better than the car I saw, and things like
headlights/bumpers/grilles/tail lights can be easily altered.
I must stress that there was no doubt as to the fact that this car was
rear wheel drive, and judging by the very aggressive body-kits and quad
headlights etc fitted to the sports model, we're talking BIG power. I
doubt very much there were any tricks played to throw us off the scent; I
said I scammed my way in, and everyone else there looked to be in their
50's (I'm 33), and all were definately non-car people!
Unless Toyota is developing a RWD V8 engined monster completely out of the
blue, that only leaves Ford & Holden (I've seen the new Magna/Galant and it
was definately not that). Ford and Holden have quite separate and well
defined identities, and my educated guess is I was looking at the Falcon.
All I need now is for Ford to do a complete about face and show a new
Falcon inspired by the Taurus (which incidently, was styled by an
Australian)!!!

Dear spankwhatsit,
I'm trying very hard to sneak in the odd thread to this group while at
work (a fairly quiet office). I'm afraid that the next time i piss myself
laughing so hard I'll be sacked!
