I've just racked up by 38,500 kms in my manual Astra 1.8 (2003). I took
it in for service and was told that I needed

a) New Disc Rotors (front)
b) New pads front and back
c) machining of rear discs

The bill from Holden was going to be $AUS920 which sounded a bit heavy
to me.

A couple of questions:

Is it typical for a city driver who is reasonably laid back in her
driving style to go through front and rear pads this quickly?

I was told that the "softer" ABS stuff wears more quickly than the pads
I used to have in my KC Laser. Is this true?

I was told that they don't machine front dics any more, that they are
simply replaced. Is this true, and if so, what's the point of changing
disc pads before they are nearly finished?

I found a place that would do the job for $800 using Bendix pads and
discs. ("ABH" European pads they said). Is this good?

Just wondering if anyone knew.

I hear it's typical for an Astra.
They use pie plates for rotors.

That's about how much they cost in Europe for genuine rotors, but not in
this backwater country where ransid profiteering is the order of the day.

Fucken tragedy, it is....
Trouble is that it's such a gotcha for Opel owners even against the
high base of Jap parts. Double tragic:-)
But, there's gotta be GovCo in there big time as well as a common or
garden GM rip-off. So, why not both?
Maybe GM Europe has managed to get their bought-off marks in Euro
GovCo to squirt out some legislation about brake noise in the range
that disturbs chickens, or squirrels or somethin'?

How's that?

Header is interesting.
ABS should have nothing whatever to do with brake wear in normal
driving.
This is the first time I've seen ABS associated with a thread title
where someone is bitching about brake wear on these cars, along with
course the disgusting prices GM Australia is charging.
IOW if the ABS gets a run other than *extremely* rarely, there's a
problem with the driver contributing to brake wear.

On a side note, almost every time someone fronts this group asking
'which car' they're told that the brakes on Astras etc are shite, and
the prices for the bits are a Class A rip-off.
Invariably, owners leap to the defence of the cars.
Then we have to have a little NG biff. Which admittedly can be fun
from time to time.

But please, when all this is over remember what you paid for the
jobbie, and the GM quote as well - tell anyone you know who's
considering buying one of those pieces of Consumer Lock-In Horror
Story exactly what happened to you. Saves trouble later for all:-)

I was quoted $165 for the pads and $180 for the disc rotors (each) at

but thats not an original rotor.

Which means it will probably last for 300,000 not 30,000 :)

Avoid original rotors and pads at all cost. They are expensive, soft, very
dirty.

Best to replace them with aussie made rotors and pads. Don't let them rip
you off.

In other words, instruct the mechy to not use genuine GM parts,..even better
if you can, buy the replacement rotors from the places that are cheaper and
take them to him to fit.
Some mechanics stick to OEM or dealer parts unless you tell them otherwise.

If EBC greenstuff are available, use them instead. I know a local mechanic
whose wife has an astra and they fitted greenstuff the first time there was
a hint of trouble and it's been like that for quite some time.

I bought a few boxs of them for the Fords the other day , 4 sets front
4 sets rear in greens , worked out $22.00 plus tax in wholesale volume
discount ... cheap enough 4 me .
