View Full Version : Why are Musso Diesels so cheap?

They look like a good package and a screaming bargain for $30k; what's the
catch?
(Facts only please. No need for all the usual xenophobic tripe....)

Old Model cut down for a ute.
Uses an old diesel. The newer Rexton uses a common rail diesel with more
poer and torque.

Grampa buaght one, surprisingly not bad build quality for a
korean/chinese car. Uses the mercedes 5 cylinder diesel. 300D i think.
Anyhow he blew the engine up good, bent conrods, all pistons need
replacing. So didn't leave a good taste in my mouth for merc quality,
rest of the car seems quite good.

But Nike and Reebok are American brands with American marketing. Musso
isn't.
The key to setting your price isn't quality it is marketing. And at that
game the Americans are the best.

I guess he taught your mum to drive, what with her bridge escapades?
Probably ran it without oil just like your mum drives her shitheaps into the
ground.
They use the old 3.0 5 cyl, ala 300D? I take it they are running the
american market turbo version, 120hp?

The only thing Merc about anything from Ssangyong is the fact that the
original blueprints came from there once they'd outgrown them. The engines
are still built by Ssangyong, and as these old diesels (when fitted to
Mercs) had a reputation for extreme longevity, seems the problem lies with
Ssangyong building them and screwing the things together.

Takes me back to Toyota Crown engines.
And F series Cruisers.
Copy best of breed and awaaaay ya go..
If they hang together, that is:-)
What follows is hearsay, and personal opinion only:-)
Like what's new???
I 'heard' that Crown engines were differently assembled to the Mercs.
M used to paint the interior of the blocks before machining, rightly
figuring that swarf wouldn't hang onto paint as readily as to raw cast
metal.
T didn't bother.
Equivalent treatment would see the M outlast the T.
But that didn't last, because Merc lost the plot with their
coolant/alloy combo, it seems, and although T has had a few major
scares in that field, they've come out on top in the rliability
stakes. This year, anyway.
