<rant>

The other day on the way to work, I was on a two way "main" suburban
road, with a couple of traffic islands and a speed limit of 60. On one
of the traffic islands up ahead were a couple of young kids who were
waiting to cross the road. This was at a cross road intersection, and I
was approaching it from a direction with the right of way.

The driver in front of me decided to pull a quick stop and let these
kids cross the road, hence the title of this post. However in the
process I nearly ran up the back of her, and the car behind me nearly
ran up the back of me. I had been keeping my ~2 second gap, however as
we were approaching this intersection with right of way and the driver
in front did not have any indicators on, I was not expecting to have to
stop. I don't know how close the other dozen or so cars that had to
unexpectedly stop came to running up the back of the person in front of
them. This was not at a pedestrian or school crossing.

As I was so bewildered that someone would do something like that in peak
hour traffic on an otherwise free flowing road, I blew my horn (after
the kids had finished crossing the road so as not to panic anyone at the
wrong time) to try and indicate to this driver what a stupid move she
had just pulled. In response she wound down her window and I could see
her trying to yell at me in her rear view mirror. Instead of then just
moving on, she sat there for another 10 seconds, then crawled off at
40km/h until the next intersection obviously in an attempt to annoy me.

What annoyed me the most was that I guarantee you she would've got to
work that day and told everyone about the hoon that blew his horn at her
for simply letting some kids cross the road. If she'd had someone
behind her who was slightly less on the ball, her car could've easily
been pushed on top of the kids that she'd stop to let through. I bet
you this thought did not cross her mind at the time, and probably never
will.

Argh.

If you nearly ran up the back of her, and the car behind nearly did to you
doesn't that tell you something?

A quick stop doesn't sound the same as an emergency stop. You were
probably just travelling too close to her given the conditions.

Likewise the car behind you.

I'm sorry you lost 10 valuable seconds you could have spent otherwise
posting crap on a newsgroup. Think of the 10minutes the kids may have lost
standing on the island?
Maybe 2 sec's is a minimum distance, you should consider 3 unless you have
Nintendo honed reflexes and concentrate 100% on drivng all the time.
You probably lost another 30minutes of your day ranting about it to everyone
too.

I honked my horn and pointed at the car in front to try and alert him that he had left a bag on the roof of
his car. His reponse was to give me the bird.

I smiled when the bag fell off and was run over.

this sort of thing happens to me all the time, never my fault of
course!

some volvo driver decided to overtake a slow-moving truck on the fwy -
right into my path as i was bearing down on her. i changed into the
emergency lane to avoid sheik/volvo interaction and as i passed her i
noticed she was gripping the steering wheel and concentrating in a
manner that indicated possibly she was praying that everything kept
going OK for her.

there are some unbelievable drivers.

That's the thing, that could easily happen, before the overtaker realised

I drove at an early hour from Browns Plains into the city , ran into
several slow pokes need two lanes you cant pass me Ill swing over both
lane types at 330 am , found their cousins when travelling across to
St Lucia at 10 am , and a coupe of NFI arseholes .
I guess they didn't appreciate the EL likes something over 70 k in 4th
or the economy goes to shiite . farkin road hogs....
finally got back into familiar territory on the way out to see a few
old diggers at Green bank and made it safe home at 3 pm ... Ill take a
cuppa and a couple of shots and a lot of time to relax.. but I have to
ask why fit indicators and stop lights if they get no use or maintenance ?.

The 10 valuable seconds was not the point. This woman stopped quickly
when nobody was expecting her to, which is not a safe thing to do and
should be avoided where possible. If just one of the drivers behind her
was not able to stop in time for whatever reason there could've easily
been a several car accident.

This particular road was in Canberra, in a suburb next to the city
centre. Even in peak hour I doubt the kids would've had to wait more
than 30 seconds to find a large and safe gap in the traffic to cross one
lane.

I don't post to this news group often, the 15 minutes or so that it took
me to write my rant is nothing compared to the amount of time others
spend on here ranting! Although I do have another one coming :-)

Yeah. One of the big problems in serious traffic is people doing
unpredictable things. I encounter idiotic moves like this on a day to day
basis like most others would. It gives me the shits also.

The thing is though, anyone who matters would have seen that she was the
moron in the situation. That is, if she didn't doctor the tale to make
herself look less stupid...

Some people seem to have the belief that if they do something that could be
considered even *slightly* helpful or nice, then no matter what volume of
stuffups they manage in the process, they are still the good guys. And you
are the bad guy for daring to think rationally and pointing out where they
stuffed up.

And then you would've had to wait even longer (as the coppers came around

If you'd just kept your hands to yourself (or waited until you were PASSING
