View Full Version : Weird clutch problem

The clutch in my rx7 seems to be going. If I take off hard a couple of times
it will grip perfectly like it's new but after that it will slip even with
sedate driving. The weird thing is that after a couple of days it goes back
to normal. I could understand what's going on if it recovered once it cooled
down but why would it recover after a few days? The last time I gave it a
hard time, probably 2 months ago, I think it took more like 4 days to
recover. Any ideas? I'm going to replace it sooner or later I'm more curious
than anything.

Cheers,
Michael

might be an oil leak
front gearbox seal or rear engine seal
My Hilux did the same, was an oil leak from the rear engine seal
only did it if I drove it hard(well, as hard as a hilux could be driven)

had to drop to 4th gear to get over the Gateway bridge

Agree,...mine used to shudder and grab when cold,..then after a while it
would slip,....it had oil on the clutch-plate. The good news is it will go
for quite a while like that,..sort of like an automatic.... ~(8^I)#-o-o

How would that work, giving it a thrashing causes oil to leak onto the
clutch?

it appears that is what happened
it only ever did it if I was driving at flat strap(120kph was all it
had)
once stopped and cooled the clutch was fine again

when the engine died from lack of oil changes you could see the oil
traces splayed out from the centre on the flywheel with the pressure
plate removed
