Most of you know my feelings as LCD being the screen of the future and I
still stand by that statement. The only screen today that is capable of
being improved through its own technology is LCD. CRT is at its' maximum
position whilst we all are aware of the short life Plasma has had. Apologies
to those of you who have bought Plasma.
Most of the negative comments at the moment are coming from those of you who
are remembering the LCD screens of years ago. 18 months ago I would have
agreed with you. Take a look at this and tell me when you think LCD
advancements will stop.

It's a nice size all right, 2m is right up there with projectors, but that
contrast ratio seems too good to be true. Certainly impressive if it's
accurate. I wonder how much a huge screen, (by TV standards), like that is
worth.

lol okay.. average time to watch tv.. say 5 hours a day.. 5 hours x 365 days
a year is 1825 hours... now our hitachi plasma has a 60,000 hour life... so
thats nearly 33 years before it starts going bad... i'm sure that people
would have different tvs in 33 years....

short... real short..

and btw... my average tv watching is about 4 hours a week... that things
gonna last forever :-P

That wasn't what he meant. He means plasma technology is short lived, i.e.
they'll stop making them because LCD technology is leapfrogging plasma.

Yeah, all the dead ones were supposed to last forever too. Funny that they
don't.
I know someone who's $10k plasma failed a few months out of warranty. Not
fixable they said. No longer under warranty. Too bad.

I know of plenty of LCD monitors with dead pixels too. Not fixable either.

A bit like Russian roulette :-)

The PR guy must be Korean too - how can it be the "worlds largest 82 inch"?

It might be the worlds largest LCD. Or it might be 82 inch.
But it cant be both!

From the page:
Samsung today unveiled the world's largest 82-inch TFT-LCD television.

I find that hard to believe. Anything is fixable.

Davo, whilst I know what you wrote is only your "feelings" (ie. opinion)
and I can accept that everyone is entitled to this, I find this comment
hard to accept:

"whilst we all are aware of the short life Plasma has had"

Er... sorry, but I'm not aware.

In fact, they've just invented plasma tubes now (gen 7) that don't have
any (or perhaps have very minimal) burn in, even compared to the current
generation plasmas - the same, if not better than the latest direct view
CRT's.

I can see down the track where LCD's may become price advantageous
compared to Plasma for the same size display - most likely when newer
competing technologies become available and/or they can make LCD panels
of that size without the high degree of faulty pixels. However at the
moment, LCD, CRT, Plasma, Rear pro, front pro LCD, DLP, CRT etc. all
fulfill different market segments and price points. To openly bag one
good technology over another, is simply irrelevant at the current time.

I am however assuming that you aren't just saying these things to get a
rise out of people... ;-)

Not so. I may be able to say I have the worlds largest 6" penis. If it
was 4" in diameter.

Sure, you just buy a replacement panel, which has to be imported and then
fitted at a higher cost than a new TV.

Would you REALLY do that?
The warranty is longer on a new set too.

From what I have read *large size* LCD panels should take the lead over PDP
in around seven years. Once they overcome a technical problem with OLED's
and moisture.
I guess that means PDP's should remain dominant in the large - very large
market for a few years yet.

Here is what Ken Morita, vice president of Panasonic AVC Networks says

"Even with LCD TV panel makers aggressively investing in seventh generation
(7G) and eighth generation (8G) production, Ken Morita, vice president of
Panasonic AVC Networks, remains optimistic that PDP will dominate the market
for large-size panels in the near future.
Morita expects that PDP TVs will account for 90% of the over 37-inch flat
panel TV segments over the next few years, as demand grows. Morita
anticipates global PDP shipments will reach five million units this year and
8.6 million units by the end of 2007.

According to International Data Corporation (IDC), about 23,000 over 40-inch
LCD TVs were sold globally last year, while over 42-inch PDP TVs totaled
more than two million in shipments.

Morita also claims that PDP technology has improved on its earlier
disadvantages, such as a shorter relative lifetime, image burn-in, and power
consumption. In addition, the pricing advantage PDP has over LCD should
improve, as the cost of production for PDP TVs will decrease 55% by the end
of 2007 compared to a decrease of only 35% for LCD TVs, according to
Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic is a brand of Matsushita).

Currently Matsushita has three PDP plants in operation and is the third
leading supplier of PDP TV panels globally, with a market share of 21.7%. LG
Electronics and Samsung SDI are ranked first and second.

Your friend should have pushed the issue with the manufacturer or published
a complaint on notgoodenough.org.

Wrong! Have you seen or even heard of the new slimline CRT sets about to
come out? They'll put 32-36"LCD/Plasmas out of business.

Yes and now if they could only manufacture a set with all pixels working...

Are you referring to SED technology?

No, I think it's different technology, so much for 'no'innovation in CRTs...

Yeah, my plasma has been perfect since I bought it 18 months ago. It aint
long, but...................

Trevor Lees
27-04-2005, 10:43 PM
we sell at present 12 Plasma's for every LCD ....since pricing per size is
far better ....viewing perfect at all angles and LCD not, blue haze is
apparent at certain angles due to rear lit panels,...so I can't see plasma
being bettered by LCD's in terms of numbers for home TV veiwing since the 2
have seperate markets and LCD is just addressing bedroom sales 90% of the
time, due to their size of 32 or less inches,
cheers Trevor Lees
