I've decided that the change from video rec to dvd recorder needs to happen.
Before I make a decision I would like to ask this group for latest
recommendations.

My needs are minimal;

1.recording footy and other tv shows for future viewing:

2. watching dvds:

3. recording FTA movies:

4. maybe copying old video tapes to dvd

Can't think of anything else.

Appreciate any guidance.

Why buy a DVD recorder? Hard drives are the way of the future. You can get a
DVD _player_ for next-to-nothing and a digital STB with HD for around $400.
The pictures from even these cheap machines look _way_ better than your
videos.

My 2¢,

**Personally, I would not bother with anything without a hard drive. My own
wish list is as follows:

* Digital tuner (I would not bother with ANY kind of recording machine
without one). HD capability preferred.
* 'Blu Ray' disk recording capability (you'll be waiting awhile for this).
* Dual tuners (minimum).
* Big (500GB+) user replaceable hard drives.
* USB/Firewire communication with computers.

Has to have a HDD, recordable DVD is dead before it started (IMO).

Anything you buy now will be outdated in two years with the advent of
higher definition removeabe media, as long as you're aware of that (ie to
record and archive HD-TV material natively is impossible on removable
media)

Unless you're a nut about archiving stuff, grab a twin tuner SDTV box
with a HDD eg Topfield. Even then if your archiving needs are only a few
percent of what you watch, it is probably still worth going down that
path and getting a cheap standalone DVD recorder. that you will probably
throw away in a coupel years anyway.

The things that annoys me most with the current crop of intergrated
HDD/DVD recorders, is the lack of digital tuners and the lack of multiple
tuners.

I have a HDD/DVD recorder (18 months old) and a DVD only recorder (2/12
years old)

Other optiions might be HTPC either build it yourself (blah) or off the
shelf

My setup with a Wintal PVR and DVD Recorder lets me record pretty much as much FTA as I want and copy what I want to keep to DVD. I got them from www.godigitaltv.tv (http://www.godigitaltv.tv).

It's a simple setup and cheap enough to not worry about wanting to upgrade in a year or two when the dream machines come out and down in price.

Trevor has just described a recorder that doesn't exist and probably never
will.
Plus, why would you want 500Gb drives today?

**Do you understand the term: "wish list"?

Do you realise how big HDTV files can be?

**Why do you think it will never exist?

Quite apart from the fact that as soon as 'Blu-Ray' recorders are available
for PCs, such a device will be child's play to assemble. Everything else is
already available.

Because movie companies will not allow you to make bit-perfect copies of
their movies off TV.

I have some predictions for you Trev. Just as S-VHS never became mainstream,
neither will:

* ANY of the new audio formats on optical disc
* BluRay DVD
* HDTV
* 7.1 surround

People are happy with DVD and CD as they are today. 99% of people don't need
or want anything better. Current digital technology sucks because it's all
about lossy compression and the sooner consumers wake up to being ripped
off, the better.

**I'm not discussing audio formats. I'm discussing technology which is
pretty much available right now.

> * BluRay DVD

**Wanna bet? In fact, I'll go further and state that 'Blu-Ray' (or similar
high capacity optical storage) WILL go mainstream. Big time.

> * HDTV

**I'll tell all those people who are buying HDTV sets that they're buying
non-existent technology. They will be surprised. I have news for you: HDTV
is already mainstream.

> * 7.1 surround

**Strawman noted.

>
> People are happy with DVD and CD as they are today. 99% of people don't

**Do you have some facts to back up that assertion? Just see if you can
provide the following data:

* Number of HD boxes sold, vs. SD boxes sold.
* Number of HDTV sets sold, vs. SD TV sets (same technology) sold.

I'll betcha the figures are not anything like 99:1. 70:30 or 80:20, maybe.
As the cost of the technology falls and the forced change to digital looms
closer, more HD sets will be sold. Eventually, the cost difference will be
minimal.

Current digital technology sucks because it's all
> about lossy compression and the sooner consumers wake up to being ripped
> off, the better.

**HDTV looks better, to my eyes, than analogue SD. MUCH better.

BTW: Here's a some words I spoke in 1987:

"Who will ever need more hard disk space than this? Certainly not me. 20MB
is all the hard disk space I will EVER need. How on Earth will I ever fill
it up."
