Hi Guys,

As you can tell I’m new around here. I've been reading a lot of your comments and feel that you might have some good insight for me.

JB HiFi in Victoria has a sale on at the moment. They have a number of deals on Home Theatre packages. One of the packages is a system that I’ve been considering well before this sale.

The package consists of an Onkyo TX-SR602 receiver along with Jamo E8 series speakers. E855 Floor standing, E805 surrounds (technically fronts), and an E8 centre speaker.

The retail price on this package is $3896 from JB. I've confirmed that this is the real retail price. JB are selling the package for $2993 which is a $900 saving.

My question is NOT whether I should get this particular type of receiver (I've done my research and I’m a fan of Onkyo and the 602 model).

My question is does this sound like a good deal? Even without this sale I realise that I could probably negotiate down to a similar price tag, however, the hard work as been done in this case???

The speaker package obviously has a few flaws. Firstly there is no sub. I would probably try and negotiate a good price on a sub with the package. The other flaw is that the surrounds they are suppling are technically Fronts just lower in the E8 series class. My theory is that I’ll move those E805 speakers to my rears and buy proper surrounds down the track.

I’d love any and all feedback guys.

Thanks

What do you mean "proper surrounds"? As far as I know, speakers that are
suitable as fronts, would be more than capable as effects (surround)
speakers?

A couple of questions you need to ask yourself. Are you happy with the
speakers? You are already talking about replacing 2 of them. That sounds
like a waste of money. Are you ready to buy? Sales have a way of making us
rush in.
You say you could probably get the same price shopping around. Possible but
if the average price is around $3900 your not going to get 25% off.
Obviously JB are doing some promotion of have a bulk buy, Try though to get
another 10% off for cash if they say no put it on Diners or American Express
I think they charge retailers about 15%.

Perhaps I could have chosen my words a little better in regards to the speakers. I took your comment onboard indecisive and went back to the Jamo website. That’s where my initial comments about the speakers came from. Looking more closely at the speaker while it is promoted as a front loud speaker they clearly also state it’s fine for a surround/effect location as well. So you’re absolutely right indecisive about the speakers. I got a little confused because Jamo produce specific speakers for the surrounds (I take it “effects” might be a better term. I’m new to this obviously).

You’re right about sales Rube. People have said they same thing to me. With this sale coming up and promoting the exact receiver I’m looking at I’m see this as an opportunity to get a decent deal. Well at least I think it’s decent??? That’s why I’ve post here.

In regards to replacing the speaker, by no means was that the intention. When the time comes to upgrade from a 5.1 to a 7.1 which the receiver is capable of. I would move the E805 speakers to the rear and then look at purchasing Jamo’s specific surrounds for the 7.1 effect. For a bit of consistency in sound (while maybe not necessary) I’d stick with Jamo for purchasing extra speakers.

Before anyone says it! I realise I shouldn't take what a manufacture says at face value. In Jamo’s case there specific surround speakers. So I’m doing the best I can and researching on the net and talking to people.

Thanks guys

"When you're out shopping" you should consider purchasing a keyboard too!

Exactly and in most situations it is actually better to use "fronts" as
surrounds as a better frequency response.
