View Full Version : How the hell is Full GPRS available on Vodafone caps?

Firstly, thanks to Jeremy Quirke for that excellent review about the $49
Full GPRS access plan posted previously under 'Vodafone Mobile Connect' (btw
Jeremy did u used to edit APC mag a while back?).
But there is confusion about Full GPRS access and the vodafone caps it
seems.
So far I've been on the Vodafone $49 Mega Cap and $79 Super Cap and so far
I've only been able to access Wap over GPRS using limited services and
access.
I've tried to access FULL GPRS so I can get Net access (thru Dial-up and
laptop) using both caps and so far I've been unsuccessful. Mind you I've had
GPRS access before (using a telsta service) so no need to re-confirm
settings.
Below are my settings on my phone for Vodafone and correct me if I'm wrong
but trying to access the VF Internet (FULL GPRS) has been unsuccessful.
Accessing the Wap over GPRS is fine on th phone using the phones built in
browser but is limited to WAP. It's limited and cannot be used to access the
net via a laptop.
I've managed to connect thru the laptop via Wap over GPRS but no pages or
pings can be done. It shows as connected with a dial-up connection icon in
the systray...negotiates about 5kb both ways....then stops
Accessing the net from the laptop (which is what FULL GPRS is about) can't
be done on the caps. Please prove me wrong.
I've rang Vodafone and they say that access is the same across all capped
plans. No FULL GPRS they say only Live! (Wap over GPRS).
Is anyone able to access FULL GPRS using the caps without adding a $49 Full
GPRS access plan?

I'd like to see this clarified as previous posts have led me to believe FULL
GPRS access via vodafone caps can be done on the $79 and $149 caps.
As a vodafone user I've mananged to use the caps to prevent using a landline
(as $30 access fee a month is a blantant downright rip-off!) but this
prevents me using the net with dial-up or broadband.
I only need to use the net a few times a month not unlimited so I'm not
prepared to pay $49 and be on a plan as well. Pre-paid suits me fine so
c'mon vodafone get Full GPRS access so that we can get a lil'bit of internet
dudes..then maybe I'll use ur $79 caps or $149 caps instead of your $49
caps...worth it?
I am on a 79 postpaid cap.. no probs... But I do note some areas of Sydney
are more problematical to access GPRS than others.
Have you tried different areas?
I'll revert with confirmation of my settings.

I've successfully loaded webpages onto my PDA via the mobile, albeit slowly.
A common usage for me is to pull a radar image from the BOM site, 128km
sydney radar.
If you're not able to access anything outside Voda's Wap portal, try ringing
them up and ask them to allow you.

Vodafone Prepaid Products support WAP over GPRS only, not Internet GPRS,
Postpaid $79/149 caps include Internet and Wap GPRS charged at 2c per kb in
with a minium session charge of 15kb...
If you want access for anything more then light email, go on the 500mb gprs
plan for $49...
Forget prepay for Internet GPRS, only Telstra Prepaid Plus and Optus Prepaid
support internet gprs (telstra prepaid gprs is free to the 6th june, then
$22 per meg) and optus is $5.50 per meg (both charged in session fee minium)

That could be it, I'm on the $49 or $79 cap, depending on how much I
anticipate using.
All GPRS works for me. Email, never managed to setup on my 5140.

You can check with vodafone or search the vodafone FAQ's only wap gprs is
avail on prepay, no NAT routed internet gprs is on prepay regardless of
plan... its avail on all postpay plans, and is included in the $79/$149 caps
(postpay)

have just pulled out my PDA and loaded www.weatherzone.com.au successfully.

Using the wap proxy, you wont be able to use NAT internet access for things
like MSN, pop3 etc..
the APN vfinternet.au is blocked.

If you just happy to access http based services from your laptop (or
alternatively have some one that will relay IP over HTTP [see
www.htthost.com] for you), your 'Wap over GPRS' settings should work
fine. The trick is just to set up the proxy in your web browser to use
10.202.2.60 port 8080.
This used to be the case the last time I used it - with prepaid. I'd be
interested if it still does.
If you don't want to go the relay route but want to get mail into your
laptop mail program, see mrpostman which gives POP3 access to webmail.
I find the term Wap over GPRS or similar terms unhelpful. GPRS supports
IP. The difference is the firewalling/proxy technology. On prepaid
Vodafone supports proxying of WAP 1.0 over UDP (on port 9201)

I'm doing impossible things then.

so your connecting with the APN vfinternet.au and can use
outlook/outlookexpress to check email and use things like msn messanger etc?
or are you just surfing using the wap proxy as a web proxy? (the latter can
be done)

I don't know whether its full GPRS or not but I know that GPRS browsing is included in the optus $49 cap plus PPT with up to $230 of calls.

thank you D.Dude now i can browse pages using Wap over GPRS...
you were right about entering the proxy settings in the browser, now it
works
and i get around 33kbs download, not bad for temp internet access
although entering www.google.com brings up the .wml page instead so i have
to revert to www.google.com/index.html etc
cheers for that ;)
