Now I've got to say I think the 110 speed limit on some of our best freeways
is too low. It's a beautiful clear sunny no wind day here in Canberra, one
where - assuming little traffic - I would be quite comfortable cruising up
the Federal Highway around 140, no drama (though I'm not about to because I
would like to keep my licence). (BTW, this is not intended to start a
discussion on speed limits.)

But there was a report on the 2pm news today about a guy in a Bentley
Continental who was picked up on the Federal Highway near Collector doing
231km/h. Apparently, following reports from a number of motorists
(presumably by mobile phone?) around Berrima, the police set up radar traps
on the Hume and Federal Highways and got him on the Federal.

I mean, 231km/h on a public road is really WAY over the top. Apparently he
was bailed at Goulburn court, and the charges were pretty extensive as one
would expect. I guess there will be a Bentley not getting much driving for a
while.

Only a couple of weeks ago there was a report of a P plater at Mittagong
picked up around 225km/h I think it was. And here in Canberra the other day,
another P plater doing something like 140km/h in an 80km/h zone - his
rationale being that he was overtaking someone!

I mean, let's be realistic, we all crib a bit at times when we judge it to
be safe to do so, but some of these speeds are just crazy. As my late father
was prone to say, "if brains were made of gunpowder, he wouldn't have enough
to part his hair".

He will get off, rich people are allowed to do big speeds in expensive
cars. Somebody else did just recently. Happens a lot.
The prick just has to have his lawyer say the car was designed for it
and he will be home free like the last guy who used that excuse.

Remember it only works for rich people wether they can drive well or not
is not the point.
Doing it around Goulburn is asking to get caught though, revenue city
down there.

yeah! last time I drove along there, all the crazed trucks who'd been doing
120 km/hr + suddenly slowed right down about 20 kms out of goulburn.

see who silly this speeding shiite is , in the circumstances at that

They may appear crazy , but was it ?
last time I took the bike out for a decent burst I went over 300 k...
now was it to fast in the situation ?

What's wealth got to do with it ?

Getting caught and being wrong are not always the same.
Speed limits at their best are more than a little questionable ...

Obviously something ridiculous was happening as far up the road as Berrima
to trigger the reports from other motorists. At 231 he's got 100km/h closing
speed on other traffic that's doing around the limit. All too easy for
someone to glance in the mirror, see a vehicle a fair way back, pull out to
overtake and find the Bently is ramming through his rear end. Unless there
is absolutely no one in sight for kms in all directions you've gotta be outa
your mind to be doing that speed. imagind Charlie Farmer deciding to run his
tractor from one of his paddocks to the other and crossing the road in front
of you?

I've driven on the autobahn in Germany and experienced how quickly someone
can come from seemingly nowhere to be looming large in the mirror. I
remember talking to one of the gurus from the Porsche factory over there and
asking what speeds they get to on the autobahn and his comment was along the
lines of "up to 250km/h it's OK, above that some people don't realise how
quickly you're closing on them..."

one of dozens of models able to exceed 300 klm/h , most every modern
bike on the face of the earth over 1000 cc can do it ( excluding
russian) , in my case a kitted Buel .

Very much aware of the problem closing , I expect the driver was not
following the formula to do so , so of course those unprepared and
indoctrinated sheep on the limit posted in resentment made a call or two .
The effect of closing at 150 klm/h over the quarry is a little
lightspeed warp WHOOSH as you approach , which is why an decent driver
eases up rather early. Bloody fun though :_)
Last year in the territory I was running the 'lations transport at
around 220 ( Mercs dont go fast) and gor passed by an early chev ... and
I do mean PASSED with authority.

NT residents will often advise its a typical upper open road speed they will
travel, it's 'safe' for most mundane cars:-)

Right, . . .

Certainly above 110km/h.

Perhaps not. . . .

Right, now which driver would I more likely 'trust'? The obvious answer is
the Bently.

> I mean, let's be realistic, we all crib a bit at times when we judge it to
> be safe to do so, but some of these speeds are just crazy.

This all depends on the circumstrances, the length of road is one of the
nations safest and would in Germany be (///), In Italy for a two-lane would
be 130km/h in Hungary 150km/h in Austria 160km/h as of 1995.

The ONLY thing really lacking is median barrier AND one hazard it does have
is those lengths bearing INTERSECTIONS, it otherwise bears INTERCHANGES, the
latter being the safest.

The road has a history of high-enders being caught and its not just that
road either folk are caught, the F3 gets speeds as high or higher, mostly
folk are left alone, but I do note that if its a prestige car, police radio
will often broadcast to patrols to keep an eye out for the black Honda NSX,
Porche, Ferrrari etc.

I rarely hear 'reported-dobbed' messages of 'standard cars' doing unsafe
things at speed or not. I suspect a jealousy thing motivates 'just some' of
the folk who delight in reported. We are becoming adept at dobbing in these
days, hell look at the new anti=piracy ads now carried on TV, a prelude to
the free trade agreement with US.

What matters to me is that the chap was 'safe' in his driving, was 'TIDY'
and not untidy in that, used indicators and slowed down as necessary.

The driver is certainly guilty of exceeding the speed-limit, sure, but one
*must* be very careful of accusing him of 'dangerous' driving in manner.

I'll remind the FEDS have a study suggesting eventual 130km/h limtis for
this and other high-standard 'federally funded' intercity roads, a step in
the appropriate direction.

IF it transpires this bloke actually 'drive in a dangerous manner' breaking
some fundamental road rules, was not neat and tidy, then fine, we should go
for harsher penalty.

I can tell you its not just rich who sometimes get lenient sentences, often
the not so well off do too, (and rightly so) it's just not as newsworthy and
so one will not hear of it. Your local courts are full of driving cases.

i go 200 on quiet country roads without any hassles, more than that
and i start to feel uncomfortable.

i remember driving at 120 km/h in an EA wagon on a country road and
getting massive (live) rear axle hop over a big bump. that was scary..

Can't comment on the roads down there, but up here on the F3, tourists
struggle to break 100 on the downhill. In the bloody middle lane ofcourse!

last time I went up to Sydney, I was overtaken by a b double semi while
I had the cruise on 120. I guess he'd passed the last of the "safe-T-cams".

as we were coming into the outskirts of Sydney, a few right lane
blockers were dragging their arses to work... it's amazing how quickly
they moved over to the left when there was a semi coming up behind them
at 130 odd.

My limited experience on the F3 is that it's usually running at Level of
