Do the specs for the player state that -R/RW or +R/RW media are supported by the player? if it is meant to support these disc types then it may be that you have discs that have not been mastered correctly.

It tell me in the manual that it will not allow any dvd's with copyright to be played , i have heard there are codes that will bypass this. It has DVD-r and DVD +r

Was the DVD recording from TV or from an outside source?
There was an incidence that someone wasn't able to play my DVD-R recording even though not copy protected from playing on other machines.
It can be that your machine may not be compatible on someone else's DVD-R or DVD+R disc that was recorded on another machine and this can happen even though the right media for your equipment. :(
Perhaps the disc itself may not agree with your equipment either.
Different media brands can cause problems too.
I don't have copyright issues on someone else's recording though.
