hi!

i recently got a nokia 6225 and for a while i couldn't send SMS messages -
getting "message not sent" every time i tried.

i phoned optus faults and they couldn't help - they only had information
on the 6220, not the 6225! they told me to call nokia.

nokia couldn't help either, after getting me to do a few tests for them,
they just said i had to go into the optus shop and get them give me
another phone and return the one i had under their 14 return scheme.

so i went into the optus shop and the guy in there tried sending a text to
himself on it and it worked. i'd been unsuccesfully trying to send
messages for 24 hours. he had no explanation.

anyway, after that, i worked out that the problem is in my phone book -
all the numbers are in the +61 format - because i transferred them over
from my gsm phone. once i'd changed the number i was trying to send a text
to into the 04... format, it worked.

i know there's issues with the "+" not working on cdma, but in the phone's
settings menu, there's an item called "international prefix". the manual
says: "[......] enter the international access code here. While dialling,
enter the + sign, and it will be replaced with the access code specified
here, when the call is made."

the +61 format works fine for calls, but apparently not for sms, which is
pretty useless - and a total pain in the arse, as i've now got to go
through and edit all my phone numbers!

i wonder if they'll fix it in a firmware upgrade ever...

How did you copy your numbers across?
Did you do it manually or over a cable?

Thanks

infrared. i copied them from my 5210. the main reason why i picked the
6225 was because it was the only nokia cdma with IR.

Slightly off the topic, but this 6225, does it have the same
case/footprint as the 6230? I ask this as the missus has the 6230 and we
can't share car kits (I have a 2280 CDMA). I'd prefer to stay with a
CDMA phone, and if the 6225 and the 6320 can share kits, I might
consider a change. Particularly if it has IR connectivity, I can then
share contacts with my PDA.

well, while it's not necessarily authoritative, mobileextras has the same
car kit cradle for both phones - MBC15S - so you might be in luck there!

They definetly have the same plug as to whether it will fit in or not I do not know but it should.

I've just searched for that and yeah, according to the Nokia website,
the accessories or "enhancements" for each of these phones do indeed
share the same cradle.

Might be something to consider sometime down the track. While I'd prefer
the missus to get a 2280, if they're still available, and go CDMA, it'd
be much easier, not to say, diplomatically more favorable, if I'd go the
way of the color display, camera, MMS and all that other stuff that I'd
never use.....

Only thing is,the 2280 is still under warranty, so if it were to "fail",
they'd probably just give me another one. And I still have a year to go
on the contract.

the only other thing you have to consider is the antenna. you'll need a
multi-band GSM and CDMA antenna.

i doubt they're still available new. the 6385 certainly doesn't appear to
be available anywhere, and they both came out around the same time.

do those car kits connect the antenna as well, or does that have to be
done separately?

No, its a network limitation, not a phone one
You can no longer send international SMS as +44 77 etc etc, it MUST be 0011
44 etc etc

Probably right. I bought a 6385 back in around Oct 2003. In April 2004,
it died due to water ingress. Naturally, warranty didn't cover it, Nokia
suggested that it was uneconomical to repair and there were no new ones
on the market. So I did the Ebay thing. Well, sort of. I tracked about a
dozen auctions. In nearly all of them, the phones' final bid or selling
price was over $650.

In quite a few of them the one fellow had purchased them. I couldn't
help myself and had to email him asking why the hell was he purchasing
so many 6385s. He responded back saying that he was getting them to
replace his fleet's 5110s and other similar GSMs that fit into the same
car kit as the 6385, as where they operated, CDMA had better coverage.

I suggested to him that it would've been far cheaper for him to bulk
purchase something like the 2280 and its equivalent car kit, and sell
the existing hardware on Ebay or whatever.

He didn't reply to that one....

Anyway, the 2280 was the path I went down. I was actually able to flog
the dead 6385 and its car kit, which helped off-set the cost of the 2280
and its new car kit.

With the missus, at the same time as I bought the 6385, she replaced her
"ancient" 3210 with a "reconditioned" 6310i off Ebay, so it was able to
be used in my car or hers, even with the CDMA or GSM antennas attached.
Ditto for the 6385. However, the 6310i turned out to be a dud. Kept
switching itself off. She ended up getting the current phone, a 6230, so
her car kit's now useless to us. Will replace it with a CARK-126 soon
and flog the CARK-91, hence wondering about inter-changeability with the
6225/6230.

yeah, but you can't make calls to +44 77 etc numbers on CDMA, either, it
must be 001144.... however, the 6225 replaces the +44 or whatever with
0011 (or whatever you configure in the "international prefix" setting. the
fact that it doesn't do that for SMS is a bit of an anomaly!
