Hi

Thanks to those who replied to my earlier post about buying a DVD Recorder.

I think I now have the choice down to 3 recorders in order of preference ...

1. Pioneer
2. Panasonic
3. LG (though have read some bad reviews lately)

All of these are about the $500 mark, give or take a few dollars with no HDD.

I have been debating whether I really need HDD in the recorder.

I will be using the recorder mainly to...

1. transfer all my videos to DVD
2. record stuff off the TV

We don't really do any timer recording, I think the last time we did that was about 4-5 years ago. Generally we watch the TV and record at the same time we are watching.

Have been told that if I get a recorder with a HDD I can copy my videos to the HDD then edit from there. I would actually prefer to edit the DVD's on the PC then burn onto a DVD.

The plan would be...

1. Copy video to DVD-RW
2. Edit the disc on the PC
3. Burn onto a DVD-R
Will this work???

So the decision I am now confused about is should I spend the extra $300-400 on getting the HDD if I want to edit the DVD on the PC?

Oh, and was told today that there are new models for many of the major brand names coming out in mid June, has anyone heard this as well? Cause if so I'll wait until then to buy as the current models will drop in price.

I think am more confused now than when I started.

Any advice from the gurus would be appreciated.

Of course there will be new models, better and cheaper, there always is, but it's a matter of when you want to purchase as to what you get for your money. There are a few models in the market that are less than perfect, they all seem to have something that someone will not be happy with, but for the most part most of what is in the market right now seems to be ok, I have heard of issues with the LG although there is meant to be a firmware fix that sorts it out, only bad thing is you need to go to their service department for the fix, they don't let you do it yourself. You would probably be surprised just how many of these that are in the market use the same components anyway, there is not a lot that sets them apart.

Your plan will work.
The dvd recorder can also be used to edit the RW.
There are some limitations with RW editing.
Using the PC is fine but the management of the HD after the works are complete can be a pain..ie deleting to defragmenting.
The Panasonic would be my choice.
..Oh ..the Panasonic uses RAM disks not RW..maybe the Pioneer is a good choice it also records in VR mode.popular editing mode.....and uses RW disks.

Hi
Have been told that if I get a recorder with a HDD I can copy my videos to the HDD then edit from there. I would actually prefer to edit the DVD's on the PC then burn onto a DVD.

I would strongly recommend using a DVD HDD recorder as this way will make much easier and quicker for you to edit the video recording on the HDD then high speed copy over to the DVD-R disc.

I got no problem on the Pioneer and I also highly recommend Panasonic as well. :dD

A caution 'Panasonic' doesn't use DVD-RW on their DVD recorder machines as it is only compatible on DVD-RAM and DVD-R and not on the DVD-RW. :rolling:
