GLOBAL mobiles group Vodafone has announced heavy cuts to
international roaming charges, detailing new pricing due to come
online in Australia in October.

Announced in the UK overnight, the new tariff scheme will cut as much
as 90 per cent from the cost of some international calls.
The cuts will be introduced in Europe from 1 June, in countries
including Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain, with other markets,
including the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand to follow.

A Vodafone spokeswoman said the scheme would be introduced in
Australia in October, with pricing the same as available to
subscribers in other markets.

Under the new "Passport" scheme, Vodafone customers would be charged
domestic rates for international calls, in addition to a connection
fee determined by the local operator.

Connection fees would range between €64c and €1.99, depending on the
country.

As an example, Vodafone said that a UK customer on the Anytime 200
plan calling home from Australia using minutes included in their plan
would be charged 75p under the new scheme, compared to £7.90 at
present.

No indicative pricing for Australian customers was included in the
announcement.

Receiving calls while overseas, which currently attracts hefty
charges, would now only incur the connection fee, allowing the
subscriber between 20 minutes and an hour of talk time, depending on
the country, Vodafone said.

Have you actually tried it? I carried two phones for a while. Don't
compare on maps alone.

My experience has been very good, better than the rest, in areas where
I travel, including travel in country areas, especially highways.

No.

But Voda is actually announcing sizable profits instead of chasing coverage
at all costs...

However, Maher has bid adieu to Australia. Maybe his successor will decide
to burn some $$$ and expand the net.

Voda had one SMALL profit in 12 years

Telstra has a MASSIVE profit, year in, year out

Why would they? They cant afford it, nor can they afford to compete on
coverage

They should go back to providing innovative VAS, they had SMS back in 1996
(probably earlier), when Telstra and Optus had no idea. Took Telstra at
least 2.5 yrs to provide it.

Now, Voda is slow. Others have all the VAS and technologies and Voda lag
behind

They have very little, if anything, to offer

Say that to all the people recently joining Vodafone...If it wern't for
Vodafone Optus would not have offered call caps...Telstra have a
MASSIVE profit because they have a monopoly of the Australia market and
offer many more services..Stop bagging Vodafone, they have a market and
a decent product. Telstra would never offer decent call caps..too
scared it might lose money!

The majority of people, don't give a shit about other piss-weak
additions to the phone system.

The majority of people use their mobile to make voice calls. They'll go
for what allows them to do this in the most cost effective manner.

If they had a decent market they would have a decent share of the SIOs
intend of 16%
