I saw it tonight with a friend, and frankly neither of us were impressed.

At best it was average and probably about as good as the first two of the
prequel trilogy.

It did have some good points, but overall it was a clockwatcher, and had I
actually had to pay the $14 odd dollars each to get in I would have been
pissed off at wasting my money, as it was the tickets were a freebie so all
I lost was a couple of hours.

I'll no doubt buy it on DVD and enjoy it at home on the big screen, but
would have quite happily waited for the DVD release.

Perhaps I expected too much having heard the hype, and now I wonder how much
of that has been the PR people with the "it's so good you must rush out and
see it now" type posts which the studios are known to do.

What probably should have been a giveaway for me was the complete lack of a
queue at the cinema on a friday night, the second night after
opening......instead of the usual huge crowds jostling for a ticket.

yeah, I'll wait until someone hands me a pirate copy or invites me to the
cinema to see the film. when all 6 come out in a matching DVD box set, then
I will go out of my way to spend my money.

I have to agree, unfortunately, and I actually wasted the money to go. At
least the scotch that I took in was good, so there was a highlight for me.
I guess that the effects were very, very good...but that doesn't make a good
movie, the quality of acting, and the script do that.

My likes of this were:
The scotch I took

the CGI

The Anakin/Obiwan fighting (which was let down by a poor end to the fight in
the lava)

The Anakin/Palpatine dialogs in the luring Anakin to the darkside.

My major hates were:
The continuity with the rest of the series (well the original anyway) was
poor, Padme dying and all.

The Damn awful 'comedy' where they just happened to put a droid doing or
saying something stupid for a cheap laugh in serious scenes.

The opening space battle where all of the ships were right at each other
broadside (like in Master and Commander), just shooting, to me looked
appauling. It was like they had done the exciting cgi with the fighters and
felt like just filling in the background with whatever they could.

Controlling and crashing the wrecked ship onto the landing pad, even though
they were gaining speed and breaking up (and the engine section being broken
away), in doing so saving the stars of the show.

The fact that space travel was virtually instantaneous ("I sense my new
apprentice is in trouble", then they are landing there in another solar
system)

Mace and the other 3 Jedi attacking Palpatine... well it was obvious who the
extras were...

Jar Jar surviving... well at least he didnt have a speaking role.

Just to name a few....

I was looking forward to this movie so much. I guess it is true, someone
said that Luca$ makes a great trailer for a movie!

Any other thoughts out there?

Dean.

When you think about all the many lose ends that had to be tied up,
ROTS did a very good job. Padme dying was a surprise to me considering
how Leia speaks about her mother in ROTJ. However, we now know we must
have been talking about her foster mum who must have died when she was
very young. We never knew about her foster parents, but we do know
they must not have told her much because she was never told of her twin
brother. She could have grown up thinking her foster parents were her
biological parents. My guess is her foster mother died when very young
and her foster father blew up in ANH.

Considering the comedy of Jar Jar Binks in Episode I and C3PO in
Episode II, I thought R2D2 was pretty damn funny in Episode III. It
worked for me anyhow.

I thought the opening scenes were a complete cracker jack myself. I
could tell from the first 30 seconds that the effects were going to be
easier to look at than in Episode II.

Who cares.

Considering you really have no point of reference to mark the distance
from one fictional planet to the next, it really doesn't matter does
it?

Mace attacking Palpatine was one of the weaker parts of the movie, I
agree with that.

Jar Jar was rightfully pushed so far into the background that I no
longer cared one way or the other about him.

I remember the scene when young Lieutenant Tarkin climbed up to Count
Dooku's Gothic castle and stabbed him in the heart with a light stake
and he turned into dust! I thought it was in Taste the Blood of the Sith
or Sith AD 1972, though.

Nah, looked stupid. Too many close-ups and motion blur of the sabers,
as per usual, in a pathetic attempt to hide the poor implementation.

> The Anakin/Palpatine dialogs in the luring Anakin to the darkside.

Personally, I don't think Palpatine did enough... I felt that Anakin's
turning to the Dark Side was unwarranted and without major motivation.

Continuity: "Younglings" and then "children" in the same movie? Which
is it gonna be, Lucas? ;)

Padme: She dies when Leia is born, but Leia "remembers" her in ROTJ?
Does ANY minute-old newborn "remember" their mother? LOL! :)

snafu1@yahoo.com

You do gotta remember that Luke and Leia are not ordinary children.
They were born of a Jedi father. It's the force! It's supernatural.
it's mysticism. Like Palpatine told Anakin, "The Dark Side of the
Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be...unnatural."
That can be said for the light side of the force, too.

Anakin has telekinetic powers. He developed them around the time Luke
and Leia were conceived. He passed them genetically down to the twins.
So it may be true that Leia could remember her mother, not in an
ordinary way, but a supernatural way.

Poor implementation? What movie were you watching?

Granted, Chris Lee's sword fight in AOTC was piss poor and heavily edited,
but the fight in ROTS was incredible. Too many close ups and motion blurs?
Not in the movie I watched.

I agree with you James. just got back from my second viewing and I could
not fault any of the fight scenes - bloody brilliant. As for screen
quality, no issues at all!!

You also got to remember how it fits into the whole six film saga.

On its own, I mean, it's a huge downer. It's meant to be. There is no
exhilliration at the end which is what makes you leave the cinema on a
high like you would normally expect from this kind od film.

As part of the saga though, it sets up ANH nicely.

She *was* adopted you know. The memories she is having are most

or just bad continuity.... Luke: "do you remember your mother? your
real mother i mean" - i'm actually surprised Lucas just didn't edit that
line out of ROTJ when he added all other crap in and took out that great
ewok music at the end of ROTJ. i can't even find that music on the
soundtrack anywhere anymore.

it looked quite spectacular and some of the fight scenes were pretty awesome
but, as we've come to expect, the writing let it down something shocking -
there is no emotional resonance whatsoever and anakin's 'conversion' to the
dark side is laughable. the three prequels should have explored the greatest
character arc in the history of film, right up there with michael corleone
in the three Godfather movies, as Anakin became Darth Vader ... Lucas had
three movies and over 7 HOURS of screen time to play with ... and what do we
get, some blubbery nonsense about saving padme and therefore he'll serve the
dark side in a blinking of an eye. george lucas writes like a pre-adolescent
boy - so while it looks fabulous it has no emotional impact or gravitas and
is only marginally better than the first two prequels. yes, it sets up Star
Wars nicely, but bloody hell, you wouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to
show a little montage at the end to do that now would you?

And we weren't, it certainly didn't live up to the hype, but was still ok as
a movie, just not one i would shell out money to see in the cinema.
Plenty like that around that are still good to watch on DVD.....
