Mpeg4 Test CDs & Tools

Hi all,
I'm pretty new to these forums after the PS2 stopped playing discs and I started looking around for a DVD player that could play Divx. The Lg 8900P looks like it has a strong following at the moment, i might get one tommorrow but everyone has them fo $179 and i'm looking for a better deal. The Pioneer 676 looks good too.

There are few posts mentioning the French Divx test disc, but there are no working links to information about it in the forums. I had a search on the net and came up with the official homepage named www.divxtest.com (http://www.divxtest.com) , of all things! And it does have english text.

which caters for the english speakers out there, untill the Divx v2 CD comes out with a full english version.

You can use BitTorrent (i asume a few of you use that) but it was slow, so i used ftp://pluridis.net/ which was damn fast (80-90 kB/s) and only took a couple of hours. Might be worth posting a sticky for the divx test cd links?

Not a bad idea to make it a sticky.
It will stay open, so people can add other test discs that come up.

Might be worth adding other useful stuff such as Gspot, Mpeg4modifier or anything else similar, what do you think?

This utility looks interesting too for people who have divx players.
I'm not one of them but thought this might be useful when i stumbled across it.

Tool based on Mpeg4Modifier, but allows you to easily remove packed bitstream from a bunch of files in a folder.

Hi,

Sorry if this question has somehow been answered already, but I could not find the answer. I'm very new to the video files game, so please bear with me.
Here is what I did:

I downloaded a few hindi movies,
I played them on my computer, they play fine with Community Codec Pack,
My computer does not have TV out, so I bought a Portable Hard Disk player from ebay. (Model Skymedia HPA2SV)
I put the files I downloaded onto the player, and some play while others don't.

Here is my question:
Is there something I can do to my player (I don't mind risking frying it) to make it play the files?
In the alternative, is there an EASY program (preferably free) I can use to convert the AVI files into a format the player will actually recognise?


Additionally, is there way to find out which format a file has been encoded. (So that I may look at a file that the player CAN play and then try to convert the files that it can not play into ones that it can)

Get a copy of Gspot (link in the post by Andw above) and report back the file details and we should be able to point you in the right direction.

Looks like this file was encoded with GMC - you'll have to re-encode it.

I just got DivX converter, and you were right. I put it through, put it on the player, and wala, it played. Any ideas if there is a freware version of a similar program?

There are a number, using the xvid codec, AutoGK, PocketDivxencoder (2 fairly easy ones), Nandub, VirtualDub (little bit more difficult).
