View Full Version : VW Golf GTI or Mini Cooper S?

Hi all,

Which would you say is the better car?

Golf GTI is $39,990 RRP, 2.0l turbo, 5 door.

Mini Cooper S is $38,500 RPP, 1.6l supercharged, 3 door.

Both apparently have similar acceleration figures - 0-100kph in 7.2 seconds.

No doubt the mini would handle better.

If I needed the room, I'd go for the GTI, otherwise I'd pick the Cooper S.

The Golf would be a great car, but I'd personally go for the Mini purely
because I think they look great and have a funkier interior. There wouldn't
be a lot in it in other areas I expect.

Well, you have a choice of a car that VW have been making for years, or a
recent BMW made to look retro.

Having owned a VW Golf (although a Diesel) in the past, I'd go for the
Golf GTI.
I believe this model has had some very good reviews:

The Mini is not quite as practical.

altering ?.

I noticed that due to the extremely strong demand, one dealer in Melbourne
is selling a black, manual GTI with no options for around $45,495 (onroad
drive away). That seems awfully excessive.

If this is a VW dealer, there must be options (is metallic paint still
$700?), as they can't sell the car for more than RRP.

>That seems awfully excessive.

What part? The WRX doesn't have much trouble selling for that sort of
money (it's performance may be a bit more manic, but it's a comparitively
horrible car to travel in), and the Mini is smaller for the same money.
How about the BMW 1 Series, a car that has sacrificed everything to remain
RWD but doesn't have the power to exploit this minimal advantage.
For a high performance German car (sit in one before you call it *small*)
the price is very reasonable. After looking closely at one recently, I'd
even say it's a bargain.

It's the South Yarra VW dealership.

Sorry I should have been clearer: I think the stamp duty and registration
are particularly high (~$5,500) for a car that is supposedly missing all
options. Even if you were to include metallic paint, surely it'd still be
$1.5-2K less?

Oh I see ;p
One thing dealers CAN charge what they like for is dealer delivery!

$39,990 RRP +
$ 1200 stamp +
$ 360 CTP +
$ 320 Rego

$41,870

I think 'Black Magic' is the metallic (and only) black, so then
$42,570...........shit!!! $2795 dealer delivery!

Which sucks because I'm in the market for the Golf GTI (Tornado Red, DSG,
Xenon lights and leather).

I'll probably wait until February/March before choosing to go with a
purchase. Hopefully by then there'll no mad rush to get the car although I
suspect not given that VWA seem to be deliberately putting the sqeeze on
supply. Heh, they may even have the option of rear parking sensors
available then.

Reminds me of the dialogue in an old movie that was on Channel Two last
week.

Bloke goes into a car dealership, and there's a shiny new 1940 Chev
Master DeLuxe Convertible (with a $599 price tag) that the salesman's
trying to sell him.

"So, this car's $599?"

"Yes, out of Detroit. But then there's the dealer delivery charge."

"How much is that?"

"Two hundred dollars."

.... then, after finding out that the detailing, paint scheme, number
plate, number plate holder, whitewall tyres, etc. all cost extra, the
bloke mentions the rear bumper-bar.

"Nice solid bumper. Does it come with the car."

"No, unless you pay the extra $25."

In the end, it turns out that the bloke can take the brand new $599
Chevrolet for *only* $1,156.78.

What I want to know is how many people would be willing to pay $5 extra for
delivery on the new telly, DVD or the like when you buy at the store. Well
if it had to be shipped in especially, yeah. Now if a cars already on the
lot where the hell are they planning on delivering it to. A yard full of
cars is purely for customers choise and advertising for the yard, COME LOOK
AT WHAT WE GOT style of thing. SO why do we pay for delivery, its for
suckers only I think.

Golf GTi - newer car, great worldwide reviews, better proposition as a daily
driver, more room.

To be fair, a car does not arrive at a dealership ready to go. I've seen
cars arrive in a royal mess(when I used to work for Bentley, we had to
allow five full days with a tech working on it full time, then detailing
on top of that). Mind you, anything over $1000 is a joke.

Why not? Hell all they have to do is groom the damn thing, the oils and
liquids dont need to be changed or anything. How long does a groom take for
a new car, especially if its one thats been assembled in Australia? Stuff
all, at most a day. Paying a groomer $15 an hour plus product thats waaaayy
under the $1k mark.

Now new BMWs etc that arrive and need a caustic wash plus a full groom you
can understand maybe, but hell, they cost a shit load more anyway, wheres
the costs comming in?

I bet that a Brisbane car yard charges the same fee as a Cairns yard. Its
all bullshit that they scam the punters into.

I made the same decision in 2003, and went for the MK4 GTI. The mini is a
great little car, but I just can't stand the interior.

I had a informer, he told me Renaults are the best....

Stand up and be counted Renaults [& 05' W-Champion?] Fernando Alonso
:-)

All the same, the WRX, still offers the best value/performance package
[2 wheeled vehicles aside] on the planet, STILL at the same price it
was offered 10 years ago!!

The EVO would want to be $45k to get some decent volume

Latter...
