At a guess I would say
+ Different alloy wheels
+ Different hubcaps on the XT.
+ 6 Speed manual gearbox on XR6T, XR8 and FPV vehicles.
+ Mrk II badge.
+ maybe slight interior trim changes and equipment levels.
+ slight changes to the front suspension on the XR8 models?
No engine changes.

That's all I can think of.

Yep, that's all Ford could think of as well. Don't know why they even
bothered with the silly MarkII business. Holden pulls the same stunts. The
local manufacturers should put out a good enough car to begin with and run
it for atleast a few years without polluting the market with all this Series
II bullshit. By all means make some running changes, but don't go marketing
it as a new model.

Agreed although I guess it makes it easier for the buyers to compare the
differences the 1st and 2nd series. As well the usual series 1 bugs are
ironed out by the time the series 2 runs come by. It does not bother me
really I don't lose sleep over it really its not worth it. :-)

apparently, the Australian non-fleet market looks at Series I as proof
of concept, and then buys Series II.
Which sits rather nicely at the idea that Australian manufacturers use
their customers as testers. Aside from the legislative issues, it's
probably the only reason the bastards offer a warranty;-)

Well just look at the Abalone didn't do too well in the first series and
then comes along the mark 2 and it still sunk. :-)

It's just a way of stretching the model run cheaply, and of hoodwinking the
buyers into thinking they're not purchasing a 2 year old car.

It's been going on for quite some time.

The's the thing, there are hardly any differences apart from a wheel cover
design, a new color range and maybe different taillights. VT hardly changed
until VZ mechanically.

I can only dream of them getting it right the first time.

I don't mind them making running changes, be it design or mechanical as the
model progresses. Take Commodore for example, I can't name a single MAJOR
change from VT to VY Did each model change deserve its own identity? Same
engine, same tranny, same suspension - save a few geometry tweaks. The
colors changed, the lights changed. The badges changed. Hoodwinked indeed.

I think the S2 VT lost the bulk of the weight from the VT, IIRC.

I think there was some 'questions' to say the least on just how much
weight was actually lost.

Some say 60 to 150kg?

If you're thinking of buying a MkII, wait until October or so for the next
revision/series ...

Yep, that sounds about right. VX just got a bit uglier and I don't
recall a weight loss.
