"Last Update: Wednesday, June 1, 2005. 6:04pm (AEST)

States back national approach to ID security

The nation's state and territory governments have agreed to support
the Federal Government in developing a national framework to enhance
identity security.

The proposal has been given the green light by state and territory
police ministers at a meeting in Brisbane today.

Federal Customs Minister, Senator Chris Ellison, says it is important
all levels of government work on this issue.

"Identity fraud and theft cost Australia about $1.1 billion a year.
We're very pleased with the support from the states and territory in
joining the Commonwealth with this initiative," he said."

There ya go, troops.
Expect it all to be based on your drivers licences, as in the Yankee
model being aped.

As predicted in a post some weeks ago. Accurately.

BTW, I have 'issues' with the numbers used by that unelected but
appointed and anointed turd ellison:
If fraudulent activity (NOTE addition of 'theft' which has fuck-all to
do with fraud), and by definition not all the perpetrators are
identified and the matter therefore not analysed at trial, how the
fuck does he know what the real figure is?
Pick an number, any number. Every player wins a prize!!
That's right Virginia, it's the Tax write-downs being used again:-))))
And *very* probably a fraud in themselves for the most part.

Also not the 'support' from the States?
Just another result of the *GST_Grab*, troops, just another one where
the states get to grovel for the boodle, and sell us down the river in
the process. Lovely.

(Sorry about that word 'boodle' - just can't help it since Charteris
arrived unannounced in a post last night.)

Yep back to the 70's where you could collect the dole/pension in as many
names as you had mailboxes, free money, didn't cost anybody anything.
Booked for speeding, DUI, let them try & lock up John Smith for unpaid
fines.

And I could use latex to copy your fingerprints, but life would be so much
better in a world without paper, photo or computer ID, where anyone could
just say they were you any damn-well time they pleased.

Your right, why should you have to prove where you live or how old you were
or your qualifications?
And of course people could just change their name/address/trade/age on the
spot whenever it suited them or they owed someone money.
A blissful Utopia indeed.

I'm still amazed that the government hasn't pretended to have woken
up yet and realized that protecting privacy is the best tool for
protecting identity. I'm even more amazed that the lynch mobs aren't
in front of their respective parliaments demanding effective privacy
laws and their enforcement.

Anybody who thinks that ID cards in a digital world are a good idea
should read Bruce Schneier's "Secrets and Lies".

as usual you (deliberately)missed the point.
If no-one was required to prove who the fuck they were on almost a
minute-by-minute basis in this sick society, then there wouldn't be
anything in particular hanging off identity.
Ergo, the bad bastards wouldn't be able to 'take advantage', as they
do now.
You also need to remember that the identity game is one placed by
statute law and the money changers.
No-one else gives a shit.
And nor should they.
eg, every time you buy something with either a credit card or a debit
card, your identity IS involved.
Paying cash?
Nope - but not always the case.
But I guess you've noticed sometimes when you pay cash, the servants
of the money changers, or the statute law, want to see some ID.
Getting the message yet?

It won't be much of an extension of the proposed
medicare card with internal chip containing the
holder's medical records.

As it exisits now, a medicare card has a unique
number for each citizen registerd.
(I know a very few who aren't registerd but that's
something else)
