View Full Version : Minor "short comings/hiccups" of LG DF8900P

So just to sum up the general "common" faults of this player:
-Player only allows randon playing of mp3's only in one folder
So if more than one folder, it will only play random in the first folder
-Player does not display time remaining
-There appears to be an overscan issue (cropping top & btm) so user may have troubles reading subtitles on xvid movies
-No zoom out function
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Anything else I have missed?. Remember I just want to know the common faults of this player.

They look more like things that you wish the player did rather than being faults as such. With the limited amount of processing available by the onboard chipset, for them to add this increased functionality you would likely lose something else, not something that most users would be happy about.

Agree with jok11n, these are not 'faults' but perhaps 'short-comings' and then only to some. To me a fault is something that prevents the player being used in a 'normal' way - for it's intended purpose.

I know the overscan issue has been mentioned by a number of DF8900P owners, but I'm not so sure it really is that big of a problem.
Using the French DivX test CD, which has a video clip with frame percentage markers overlaid on it, I get about 90-95% of the vertical resolution of the frame as viewable picture on my widescreen TV.
Given most TVs are set up to overscan to some degree, I think that's a reasonable result for the DF8900P.

my apologies, maybe I should have used "short comings" in the title.
What I'm basically trying to get at, is that majority of the xvid players don't appear to have these "short comings".
This is just an FYI for those who want to know what "short comings". this player has.
Obviously the positives outweigh the negatives. But there is already a separate thread outling the positives.
I know there will be people out there that would like to know this information and then include this as maybe a reference in their decision of whether to buy the player or not (yes of course there are other things to take into consideration), but remember that not everyones needs/tastes are the same.
There will be people who won't care about the MINOR hiccups. But believe me, there are others who will.
I'm not bagging the player, as I also have one myself and I think it's brilliant, but there were simple features that were not present or overlooked.
All I have done is taken out the Hiccups from the 259 post thread http://forums.eyo.com.au/showthread.php?t=86469 and planted it here for your convenience.
Remember, I am only referring to the common "hiccups" accross the board for this player.
As you would have noticed, I have changed the title.
Cheers:)

Yeah I have huge overscan issues with my DF8900P too :(
I think that if anyone is going to hack the firmware, this should be one of the first focuses (even before OGG support).

You are not alone. Follow the adventures of others with the same problem right here:

Short story: two trips to the service centre, 5 weeks, new laser - all to no avail. No one seems to know why it does it. Although the new laser worked for 2 months.
I suggest you take in for servicing and direct them to the above thread.
