View Full Version : LG 8900P vs Pioneer 676A vs Samsung HD747
These three players are near the same in price. Is there anything in features or quality which makes any of them the obvious choice?

Haven't checked lately, but I thought the best price for the Pioneer was still around $200, whereas the LG can be had for around $140.
Haven't seen the Pioneer in the flesh, but it is supposed to have one of the best PQs of any MediaTek based player due to the high spec. video DACs that Pioneer use. It also supports DVD-Audio and SACD, so if either of these are important to you, then the choice is easy.
However, on the MPEG4 front, the LG is one of few players that will happily play files encoded with Packed Bitstream, so that's one for the LG. The LG also has 5.1 analogue audio outputs, which I'm not sure if the Pioneer has or not.
There has been some bad press and user comments regarding the Samsung, which may be one of the reasons why it's had such a large drop in price over the last 6 months (from memory it used to be somewhere around the $500 mark). Its main claim to fame is the ability to upscale DVD output to run with projectors and HD displays over a DMI connection, so if this capability is not important to you, it may be best to stay away from this model. Not sure either about what the Samsung supports in terms of MPEG4 encoding options such as QPEL, GMC, packed bitstream, etc.

$140 is the newer model with 2 channel and no card reader, the one your mentioned generally sells around the $170 mark although some have reported buying it at around $150, very hard to get though as most retailers seem to be out of stock. Reports from users seem to suggest that the DivX side of things are pretty equal, if you don't need an onboard decoder and a card reader the cheaper version might do what you want. All the user feedback seems to point to the LG being the best of the models you mentioned.

$140 would be truly exceptional for the 8900, but $150-$160 is the norm. If your in Melbourne, Myer MegaMart in Chadstone had at least 6 in stock as of Thursday night.
