Hi, I saw somewhere recently a description of this product.

http://news.individual.net/index.php

Can anyone who has paid and uses the service describe if it is any good?
Good points? Bad points? Can all aus. groups be accessed? What is the cost
in AUD?

In the years I've been using it as my news server, I think there has
been one or two moments of downtime. Otherwise it has been flawless.

>Bad points?

It costs money.

>Can all aus. groups be accessed?

Yes, I believe so.

>What is the cost

I think it translates to about $15 per annum, which I happily paid
for. But with my decreasing use of Usenet, I probably won't pay again
this time next year.

Its mostly crap. The link between here and there is very slow. About
2-3 times slower than a local newsserver. It seems to take a long while
for a submitted post to be accepted too.

They don't carry all news groups (especially no binaries). For a long
time there was bug where a non-carried newsgroup in a post's newsgroup
list meant you could even read the post in a carried newsgroup (your
newsreader would report the post as invalid). I think this has been
fixed recently. They also filter all posts to block incoming and
outgoing spam. It also means you may not see some legitimate posts and
some of yours may get cancelled.

The staff aren't very responsive. The euro cost is high in AUD. You can
check the current exchange rate at http://www.xe.com/ucc/

There are better and cheaper alternatives in the US. Giganews, for
example. Astraweb is crap.

Slightly slower than my ISP, but still very fast.

Bullshit.

True, but they make no secret of this.

So it no longer has any bearing...

Never had any of the above cause any problems in the four years or so I've
been using it.

> The staff aren't very responsive.

I've only ever made one query to them and received a reply by email about
three hours later.

> The euro cost is high in AUD. You

Giganews is excellent, but cheaper? The cheapest Giganews plan is US$7.99
per month, which equates to about AUD$10.50 a month which is AUD$126 per
annum. (It's dearest plan is US$24.99 a month or almost AUD$33 a month
getting close to $390 a year) Individual is 10 Euro or about AUD$16 per
annum, which makes Giganews cheapest plan almost eight times the cost of
Individual. If you intend downloading lots of binaries and have deep
pockets, Giganews is the way to go, but for normal day to day text
newsgroups, Individual is by far the better value for money.

He's wrong, the cost is 10 Euros per annum which is approx $15 so its not
high. It doesn't take a long time for a post to be accepted, mine take no
time at all. Yes the connection time is long but thats ebcause they're in
Europr. Its not that long though, it doesn't trouble me at all unlike some
web forums. They do only carry text newsgroups not binaries but thats the
service they're operating.

I would say in general the service is excellent.

If you can't read this they're sus. :)

It's been very, very good over the two or three years I've been using
it. Especially when compared to my own ISP's news server (Bogpond).

>Good points? Bad points? Can all aus. groups be accessed? What is the cost
>in AUD?

No binaries (bless 'em), otherwise an excellent range (currently
23,785 groups). AFAIK all aus. groups are there.

You must use a valid email address (no munging), which is easily
accomodated.

$17.36 pa at the exchange rate prevailing at the time it ceased to be
free.

Only someone going under the name Little Johnny Howard could think that
$US7.99 per month is cheaper than Eur10 per year!

Given that it was 99.99% total bullshit and wrong, appreciate it, but take
absolutely no notice of it!

I've used them free for years so I had no hesitation in paying. They
provide excellent coverage of text groups, cost was $AUD17.77.

It's located in Germany, so if you question the 6 million lie, expect
to be banned. Other than that it was okay when I used it. Now I have
been using Google Groups (beta) for months without a problem (apart
from occasionally hitting the posting limit on busy days and being
quite annoyed by it).

Why pay?
Just use aioe.cjb.net
It's free. No registration. No userid nor password. Encrypted IP address.
Just type aioe.cjb.net in the server name and you're in. It's that simple.

who probably has never used the service. The only useful info in his

It's not as good as most quality binary servers but it's a lot cheaper.
