Does the player have the capabilities to display the correct aspect ratio for 16:9 dvix/xvid movies on a widescreen plasma/tv?

yes. There's a screen stretch mode attached to the zoom button that allows you to stretch the image vertically to fill the screen on a widescreen TV.
