Hi there all,
New user to the dvd/divx scene. What software would you all recommend to convert divx movies back to dvd to play on normal dvd players? or to shrink normal dvds to divx to fit a few on a disk.

To convert back to DVD try DVD Santa, very easy to use and does a pretty good job of it.

To convert a movie to DivX or XviD you can use one of the following:
Dr. DivX (http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&safe=off&biw=1102&q=Dr.+DivX+Download&meta=)
+ Very easy to use
- Has problems deinterlacing
- Only supports DivX
- Discontinued product
- Shareware
AutoGKnot (http://www.autogk.me.uk/)
+ Supports DivX & XviD
+ Supports hardware compatibility mode
+ Automatically uses best encoding settings*
- Contains spyware
Fairuse Wizard (http://www.fairusewizard.com/)
+ Supports DivX & XviD
+ Beginner & advanced modes
- No hardware compatibility mode
- Has problems with cropping
- Pro version is not free
*Performs a quality analyze on the source & uses appropriate frames size, resize filter, audio format, & video encoder parameters.

Fairuse Wizard Pro is free. You just have to uncomment a line and compile yourself.

For XviD I would suggest ARCalculator.
Any app that lets you access the profiles you can enable DXN HT to get hardware compatibility or use my modified version with MTK profiles.

FairUse Wizard is GPLed and as such free (as in freedom) - although the current FU developer decided to charge a small download fee (as he's fully entitled to) for the full version, you can either download the source code and compile it yourself or use a binary prepared already by others. You can find instructions and the binary on Doom9's forum:
Although some other programs may offer more options I personally found FU to be by far the most convenient one for the Win environment (you can also use it under Linux if you ever decide to move)...

WinAvi is pretty easy to use for divx to dvd. Conversion is quick. It is not free though.
