View Full Version : help-carb filling with petrol

Hi all, my 88 mitsu colt used to go just fine but a few months ago became
hard to start when hot. Taking off the air cleaner revealed the secondary
chamber had partially filled with petrol, flooding the shit out of it.
So , I got hold of a carbie kit, dismantled, reassembled, replaced the a few
bits and pieces and the problem seemed to go away, for a couple of months.
Now its back, worse than ever, when I took the air cleaner off yesterday the
petrol could be seen bubbling out of the seconary main delivery tube (is
that what it called?) and the little hole above it (air bleed). When I rev
the car up enough for the secondary to open and then let it off I also see
big globs of petrol come out.
Can anyone point me in the direction I should be looking here? I once
thought it may be the fuel bowl vent solenoid (if I take it out and blow
through the hole petrol pisses out) but then that must be open when the
engines running. I'm sure petol shouldn't be coming out quite so easily.
Nothing comes out of the primary when I blow into the float chamer, just the
secondary.
I'm only a poor student and I need to keep this POS running for a few more
months yet. I'm actually a bit worried someone will light a smoke nearby and
kaboom, you can really smell the vapor when its flooded.

Is the fuel bowl over filling? The colt should have a glass window where you
can check the level, if it's too full then the valve that stops fuel
entering when the bowl is full is not working correctly.

Take the petrol cap off when this is happening. If you get a woosh of
air and fuel stops pouring into the chamber, the problem is fuel tank
pressure. I've seen it happen before.

I don't know what the problem might be, but if it were me, I wouldn't waste
the time trying to fix it. I'd probably just spend about $30 at a wrecker
for another carby. Must be heaps of them lying around. That is unless of
course it is tank pressure like Ron said.

If that doesnt fix it then take a look at the needle and seat in the
float bowl and check the bowl level.

Needle and seat isn't closing most likely, and/or the float level is too
high or the float itself is punctured.
On the side of the card is a little viewing window with a white dot in the
middle. The fuel level should be near that dot. I suspect yours is well
above it.
To fix, replace the needle and seat and adjust the float level, and check to
see if the float has fuel inside it. If it has, replace that too.

Sitting dry for ages and probably worse then the one he has now. Better to
fix a known quantity IMO.

Thanks for the sugestions. Check the fuel tank thing, all fine there.
I put a new needle and seat in it when I did the kit, I thought I set the
float level according to the manual, but maybee I did it wrong.
I think I will pull the whole thing off today and check it all again.

Forget the manual. Stick a bit of hose on the inlet side of the carb so you
can blow into it whilst you slowly with raise the float manually. You will
know when the needle and seat closes, and that is the float level. Adjust it
so that the float it is pretty much horizontal and it should be pretty
right.
You will know by getting it running and checking the level in the sight
glass.

What car and year are we talking about? Some details may help limit the
number of possible causes. For example, does this car have an electric or
mechanical fuel pump?

It's an old Colt, they only have carbs and mechanical fuel pumps, not that
it makes a difference in this case.
