Hi all,
After all the replys from you guys I decided to replace the belt just
for peace of mind. The timing belt that came out looks just like new,
absolutly no sign of aging. The other 3 belts also looked like new. But
the water pump was starting to seep, so it was replaced also. I do use
only synthetic oil because I believe it will help the truck last longer
and change the oil every 5500 miles or 6 months. I value your opinions as
you guys in Aus. seem to know more about the workings of the vehicles you
own and how to keep them on the road longer and do more of your own work.
Still wish I could get a diesel though. Thanks again. Scott

You can't tell what condition the belt is by looking at it.

The way I usually inspect them is to turn them inside out and check for
cracking on the inside of the teeth.
I've seen a few that had cracks (Mazda diesel) after being changed at
100,000klms and others that had gone well over the recommended change
time (Honda) that still looked like new but I agree that a visual
inspection won't tell you if a belt is due for replacement or not.

Yep, I agree.
I've seen two belts that had done nearly 200K when replacement was
recommended at 80K IIRC....they looked like they'd had a run around
the block.

one way to check is check it against a new belt
the old one will be stretched and noticibly larger than the new one
just like fan belts

but as stated
visial check won't show the cracked belt reinforcing material inside
