Come on Ford. Cough up the truth. We know it's made in South Africa but a
more pressing issue needs resolution. The new Focus campaign is heavily
boasting "German Engineering" but with most of the car's mechanical
underpinnings shared with the Mazda3 isn't this campaign a little misleading
and shouldn't the engineering credit go to Japan?

I wonder how much of the WRC Focus (which seems like a decent piece of
kit) is down to Mazda:-)

The Focus is a world car - it's also built in the USA.

it'd be a 'world' car as far as yanks were concerned if it was only
built there, wouldn't it? :) :)

Car companies have been using that sort of marketing bullshit from the
day dot.
They probably have at least one engineer born in Germany on the
engineering team that designed the car so hence the claim, anyone who
believes or takes any notice of that type of marketing crap is a fool.

No, even less than that. They had a piss up and drank German beer. And
ate sausages whose names ended in "wurst" =)

Probably very little...

The Mazda 3 is based on the Focus chassis. The rear suspension etc is
similar to that fitted to the original focus that came out in '98.
The new Volvo S40 is also based on the Focus chassis.

Focus, Mazda3 and Volvo V40 are all based on the same platform so it is
German, Swedish and Japanese depending upon your mood. So it's like
schnitzel, whale and sushi.

Just wait till Holden release the new "Barina" that's actually a Daewoo
Kalos, a new cheaper than Astra rebadged Daewoo Lacetti, and something else
made by Daewoo to compete with the Territory. How many times do you think
the word Korea or Dog will appear in those ads??

Not a good analogy. Schnitzel, whale meat and sushi come from three
entirely different and unrelated beasts.

Beat me to it. The advertising is probably closer to the truth than even
the media company realise.

Design and planning in Germany, refinement and suspension structure by Ford.
Mazda had their fingers in the drivetrain - engine and gearbox. Volvo also
had a few bucks involved in the safety and survivability perspective. South
Africa not only builds the Focus, but the odd BMW, Toyota and ?Mercedes?

Germany was responsible for the design and engineering - so I guess the
advertising is factual, just not quite the complete picture.

Rumour has it, in this day and age, that's it's infact possible to design
something in one particular place in the world, then build it somewhere
else. I don't know how they do it, perhaps they could mail the designs, of
even pick up a phone, or even use the 'net to help them out! But that'd be
too technologically advanced, surely.

Simon,

Found out the other day that one of Jaguars designers was employed by
Ford AU to get the BA and Territory off the ground. That could explain
the Jaguar IRS. He is also the same guy who ripped the V6 twin turbo
diesel from a new S-Type and trialed it in the Territory.

Now he has gone back to the UK because Ford global want Jaguar to develop
a Cross Over/SUV ??
Why I don't know, we already have Land/Range Rovers running Jaguar
engines.
Don't be too surprised if you eventually see a Territory type of vehicle
with a leaper on the bonnet and a Jaguar grill :-)

Ford are going full bore to dominate the market in all ranges :-)

Ron

isn't it funny how german design is so coveted, from vehicle
engineering to perverted scat porno :)
