I've had this unit since it first came out , and have been happy with it for the most part .
However I have noticed the remote was not very sensitive , so I took it into a local LG service centre , who updated the firmware , and now it works a treat .
The date of production on my machine was October 2004 , and the original firmare was V1.3471 , now it is V 1.385201 .
I havent noticed any other changes , and there is still no remaining time display , but the machine is a lot more usable now.
As LG dont make their firmware available to end users , it means a trip to a service centre , mind you , I dont blame them , I can imagine the number of dead machines if mums and dads started trying to update machines.

It's only a matter of time until someone that has one of these that knows how to extract the firmware gets the update done too, it will then become available pretty quickly.

That would be nice... :D

I've tried to buy one a few times, every time I go to get one there's none left :(

I had a similar problem with another device. I ended up fixing the problem by opening up and realigning the infrared receiver. It was not pointing at the user before I fixed it.

Is it possible while the machine was in the service centre, they did something similar? or the technician knew straight away that a firmware will fix remote problem?

(Don't open up devices if you are not a technician, especially the main powered ones! The warranty will be voided as soon as you do that.)

May I ask which service centre?

If it's a Melbourne one I might try to get a free firmware update while my machine's still under warranty... :PI

Do you know if there is a button code to enter into the remote so it displays the firmware version on screen? my old cheapo hyundai dvd player had this option..

vlork, they just put a cd in the machine to update it ?

You can dump firmware from the LGs if you take the lid of. Just find the comm points, you need a serial cable, usually one from a mobile phone. I don't have the extact details but I've seen them in one of the other LG 8900P threads.

1.3852 was released by LG Poland on its website :
http://pl.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp
There is another forum about it but it didn't support the memcard slots. So if this is a specific 8900P firmware it would be very good to get it dumped. BAC seems to be the expert on this from the other 8900 thread.

Correct, NX3 - the Polish firmware is the same version number as reported by vlork after they upgraded his machine, but it definitely didn't support the memory card slots.

Unfortunately, the LG doesn't have the pins soldered onto the connector pads to allow the firmware to be extracted via serial cable, so these would have to be added first. The LG also seems to be fussy about the type of cable used - the first cable I made up (based on a Nokia 5110 data cable) fried my firmware.

If vlork can let us know which LG service centre did the job on his machine, maybe one of us that is already set up for serial cable firmware transfer can get the upgrade done and make it available to all. :)

Then do you guys think this firmware would work on the LG DV9723P because it doesn't have memory slots?

This link doesn't point me to any firmware update, does anyone have a copy of this firmware they can share?

I doubt it - the DV9723P has a different mainboard (9000 series) to all the 8xxx players (8000 series).

This link doesn't point me to any firmware update, does anyone have a copy of this firmware they can share?
The link takes you to a page where you can reference the firmware. Look under the heading Biuletyny on that page and you will see some hyperlinks underneath. The third one is for the 8xxx series players, but the first one says it is for DVX9900/DVX9800/DVX9700.

LG's track record thus far is that pretty much all firmwares for 8xxx series players are interchangeable - at least to the point of being able to boot the player up, see if it works OK and still have the capabilty to flash back to another version if it's not a good fit. Given this, the same may apply to 9xxx series firmwares as well.

I suppose it all comes down to how desperate for a firmware update you are... :PI In any event, it might be wise to try and source a copy of the original firmware for your machine before trying anything else.

>but it has the pads ? I dumped from a Cello (generic mediatek) my holding the cable end on the pads. Its a little more tricky but can be done.

Unfortunately, the solder pads are on the underside of the mainboard. You'd have to try placing pins through the holes and contacting them with the solder pads underneath. Beware, though - the solder pads are very delicate and damage easily (I found this out the hard way...)

Don't like our chances of getting anything out of LG Australia - they have proven their product ignorance and general unwillingness to help the customer on many occasions.

Vlork, are you still lurking about anywhere? ;)

>hmm ok that sounds tricky ! I found doing the pads on top a pain in the backside.

Cheers for info BAC, do u still run the polish firmware as per the other thread?

>LG don't seem very helpful worldwide. The UK tech support, sales support are next to useless. I still don't get why LG sell the same model dvd players across europe but the UK version don't support divx.

>please say yes :)

I needed access to the memory card slots, so I had to drop back to the Targa firmware.

It's a shame though, as 1.38 seems to be the best of the versions I've tried. :(

Hmm, something just struck me

Now that we know new firmware exists to fix a problem, all LG service centres would have access to it, so doesnt matter where Vlork took his/her player to.

So would just be a matter of marching in to your closest service centre (au.lgservice.com) and telling them you're having remote control problems :)

I'd probably do it myself today except I lent the LG to my brother this week to watch a whole bunch of DivX movies he wanted to see :PI

Good point ...and if I lived in Australia I'd do it asap ! I've emailed Targa UK but not hopeful.
