I've be trying to find a way to record from a Pay TV STB (Scart via component output) to computer (Using my computer as a DVD/HDD Recorder as I cannot yet buy one) other than S-Video. I have tried S-Video to turn my VHS's to DVD's and the quality is really poor. I have found a Firewire Capture device with Component Inputs which I hope will do the job but it is only make is the US and the Australia Agent want far too much for it. But I ask, why is there not more capture cards (PCI,USB or Firewire) with component inputs. Can anyone tell me if they know of others. Anyway to back to the point.

This project started when I tried to convert all my Baseball Videos to my HDD/DVD and in the middle of this process my VCR died. So now the project is to find a way to capture from a non-digital source, be it from STB(that would normally go to a VCR-This one is Scart via Componet), VCR or what ever. Can anyone tell me about what effects the quality. I would assume that the first thing would be making sure the source is good, then the capturing hardware, the cable quality and the length would be important, the software doing the capturing and last, the hardware saving the file as in the speed of the computer system/HDD's/DVD drive. Would this be accurate.

The other part of this is a way to schedule a recording similar to the old VCR. I have a Fusion DVB-T Plus HDTV Card and it has a this, but only for use with the card. If this capture card had S-Video inputs but the quality is very poor-the picture is very jumpy and unwatchable. It does have firewire support. So if there was a way to get the signal from the STB to the capture card via firewire then it would probably work. Is it possible to get Component to firewire using a converter or by some other means. If there is not a way to do this then I need to find software to schelule a analogue recording. Is this possible.

So all would turn part of my computer into a HDD/DVD Recorder with component video inputs, similar to the top of the line Sony, and would give my time to save for a more suitable unit.

We who live in Australia cannot even buy a DVD/HDD for our Satelite Pay TV as the Pay TV owner will not allow it. The closest we can get is to fork out to the Pay TV provider $500 plus a monthly fee to use the one that the operator tells us to. How's that pay $500 and never own it. Plus no networking or ability to keep some of the recording.

Cheers
