Im surprised at how many people buy the cheap units.... What is the life expectancy of a unit for under a 100 dollars?
why not buy a better branded unit that imo will last alot longer? or do you guys already have one and these are just for bedrooms and for curiousity sake?
not having a dig just curious!

Well I'm suprised that people buy expensive units thinking they're going to last forever...
Well known brands and the cheap but very competitive Asian brands use the same internal components and both use cheap labour assembly lines...don't need to be that clever then to understand why the cheap alternatives can price so aggressively over established brands like Panasonic and Sony. Speaking of price, since Quality control seems to be a principle that actually meant something pre 90's :) I have less qualm with a cheapie lasting me a year than say an expensive Sony or Panasonic lasting only the same distance.

After being fed up with wasting money on so called 'better branded' av equipment that didn't live up to expectation I can happily say I still have my Omni 3200 DVD player I bought back in '01/'02....as the guy from the Castle would say 'paid for itself' ;)

I think a lot of the brand name enthusiasts would be very disheartened to learn that not only are they sharing components these days, they are also being built in the same factories by the same people using exactly the same process. I have been in the factories that build some of the cheapest models currently in our market, their other clients include Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG and a whole bunch of other 'superior brand names'

No doubt quality isnt what it used to be, however i have owned 'cheapie' units such as xms etc and i still think the end product isnt quality. I have had the remote control cease functioning for no apparent reason, and the display screen shorting out on the unit, not to mention endless stuttering problems as the unit aged, probably due to laser alignment.
All in all in the short term it was a great unit but for the few hundred i got it for at the time when dvd players were still newish i wish i had of gone for a pioneer or something like my mate did which is still going strong.
sharing components or not and being built in the same factory which im sure almost all dvd players are, its the end design and how the components are utilised by the unit where the money has been spent developing the player that allows the unit to last longer.
Again my opinion and im sure for every cheapie dud there are fewer but expensive duds

Margins, margins, margins...that's all the big players care about these days!! Cutting costs and overhead but still charging big bucks!
@Artic, I recall when DVD players first hit the market, the established brands were asking anywhere from $500 to $700 plus an extra $100 to make 'em zone free!!!
After doing my research and learning from an engineer via another 'eyo forum' that the internal components were the same as that of a Panasonic, I took the leap. It only cost me $279 and came region free ;)
Basically I paid half the price for 'old' technology that can't play avi/mpeg files ;) Your friends Pioneer can't do what my cheap XMS 989 can :)

They all end failing anyway, I've had a few Pioneers die on me already, I'm sure there are plenty of working ones but I've had more than my fair share of what I would consider early life failures when cost/lifespan is taken into account.

With quality and technological longevity combined it is reasonable to pay what you think is fair for a product that you expect to replace no latter than 18months into its life (12 months being closer to reality).
With the speed and low prices the chinese punch out technology its no wonder people don't want to invest to much into technology that has an expiry date based on the day you open the box the technology came in. Look at all those that paid over 1000 dollars only 15 months ago for a restricted dvd recorder, today better technology can be bought for well under $300 dollars and tommorrow much better technology will be available for under $300 and so it will continue for at least 5 more years before things settle down for the next technological lull.

hey guys.. just some feedback on the $60 maya dvd player
the remote control doesn't work that well.... you have to be rigth in front of the unit for it to work..
some of my friends divx had distortions when reading the LG dvd's.. i burnt these to Maxwell DVD's and read it fine...:(
maybe my unit is a bit dodge? i don't know...
in summary.. spend a bit more on a player and my recomendation is go for Zensonic 330... i have one and it's great .. i love it..!!

Thanks for the feedback. I was about to get one this week but I think I will wait a bit longer.
The other reason to buy cheap is that technology advance so fast if you spend say $150 for a LG and next year you found that it may not play a new standard won't you feel upset? But if you only spent say $60 I won't have a second thought and go and buy a new one that will play the new standard.
