Does the DVD Player sound matter if connected to an Amp?

I am looking to buy an amplifier with Dolby Digital and DTS etc and a
DVD player that won't let it down when watching movies and a bit of
listening to music.

Lots of reviews of DVD Players describe in detail the dynamics etc of
the sound from the DVD Player. If the DVD Player is connected to an
Amplifier would not the Amp being doing all the Dolby
Digital/DTS/Audio decoding/processing etc?

Would not the DVD Player be much more than a data reader like on a PC?
