MILES DAVIS - CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS (LIVE) 1970 6 CD SET RARE
(Columbia / Legacy C6K 93614)
These CDs have been played, but are in excellent condition - no scratches.
Almost 6 hours of music in total, nearly 5 hours previously unreleased.
Superb new mixing and re-mastering - superior to the excerpts that
appear on the re-mastered version of LIVE-EVIL!
Re-mixed by Jim Anderson, and Mastered by Mark Wilder & Seth Foster at
Sony Music Studios, N.Y.C.
For auction, a 6 CD advanced set of Miles Davis' Cellar Door Sessions
December (16th - 19th) 1970. Plus a copy of the liner notes with essays
written by all living members of the band, and reissue producers Bob
Belden and Adam Holzman.
This set of Miles Davis recordings is a must for any fan of jazz, rock,
funk and/or fusion, or just plain great live jazz. Especially those who
love Miles’ albums Bitches Brew, Tribute to Jack Johnson, Live-Evil, and
Dark Magus. The combination of DeJohnette on drums with Henderson on
bass gives these recordings a solidly rock foundation that makes it an
amazing piece of rock history, let alone its basis in jazz and funk.
Columbia / Legacy Blurb:
Here is the Miles Davis collection that his legions of American fans
have most eagerly awaited. Previously available as a fraction of the
music herein, and only initially issued domestically (in edited form on
the two-LP set, LIVE-EVIL), The Cellar Door Sessions was recorded
December 16 - 19, 1970 at a club in Washington, D.C., where the great
trumpeter-bandleader Davis was at the helm of one of his most
stimulating groups.
When most people think of Davis' foremost ensembles they instantly hail
his first and second great quintets, from the mid 1950s and mid-1960s
respectively. But the sextet on the Cellar Door's bandstand is a sheer
marvel of kinetic energy. And adding another dimension of excitement to
the final two discs is the blazing guitar of John McLaughlin. With the
exception of young bassist Henderson, who had made his bones as a Motown
session ace and touring with Stevie Wonder, every member of this Davis
Band has subsequently proved to be a major figure in Jazz; in his own
way, each has placed a highly personal stamp on improvisation during the
past 35 years.
In 1969, the year Davis (1926 - 1991) recorded IN A SILENT WAY and
BITCHES BREW, each a landmark of early jazz-rock fusion, he told
Downbeat's Don DeMichael "I could put together the greatest rock 'n roll
band you ever heard." Well here it is, and if the Davis group is not
working the same blues-rockin' side of the street as the Rolling Stones,
they're breaking on through to another side - the fearless and peerless
jazz side of funkmeisters James Brown and Sly Stone, and rock deity Jimi
Hendrix. The twenty-eight performances spread out over these six discs
running nearly six hours, add up to an inestimable document of the
musical cross breeding spearheaded by Miles Davis and his compatible crew.
