Hi all,

I finally got around to chcking whats on top of my 253 in my HJ.
The guy said it was "a real big 4bbl holley". I thought better of it
and checked.

I have a 450 holley. I wasn't even aware that they made one.
It pulls really well but it definately needs to be rebuilt and
thoroughly cleaned.

Are kits for these common place/interchangable with another holley?

Thanks,
Brett M.

PS. Whats a good cam for LPG ina 253 VH?

The Holly 450 was a popular carb for over worked sixes and small V8s
parts should be readily available from any Holly Supplier

How lucky can you get. Anything bigger would've overdone it.

There's plenty of 450's around, it's just that 600 sounds better to
some.

Holley seem to like to sell their parts separately (it's more
profitable than selling kits) -- any good parts stockists should have
'em. Or, Fuel Miser will probably offer a kit (from Repco).

Dismantle and clean it before you buy anything as stripped threads can
be a problem with Holleys.

Bigger has to be better, unless we are talking about Roseanne or Oprah.

I have gotten mild 253s (mild by my standards, possibly no-one elses) to
go harder with a 600 than with a 465 (and I'm into testing rather than
'feeling' unlike most who would fit a bigge carb and 'know' it's
better), and have similar experience with 265 hemis. I do concede it
takes a little more attention to detail with regard to setup. I'd
further suggest it's also good if using an adapter plate on a std inlet
manifold, to radius the edges on the carb base section of the inlet man
to make a better transition from holley to manifold, and furthermore
either running an adapter plate that retains the divider in the inlet
to split the carb in half (so to speak) or adding it via a small plate
to an 'open' adapter plate, by cutting grooves and slotting it in.

If I might suggest going through someone like Hume Performance, and
specifically ordering reusable fuel bowl and metering block gaskets. And
paper for the rest. They actually seal better than paper type ones, are
genuinely reusable (even a after years) and put an end to frustrating
cleaning and scraping to get the paper ones off. They aren't a hell of a
lot different price wise what's more.
