sorry to bother you but i am one of those unhappy people of xms-888 (dont' worry, im' not complaining)

just that i have average knowledge of comps and machines so i get confused when the 'EYO forums' talks about
ACC CODE, OR OPENING UP THE MACHINE AND CRAP LIKE THAT.

someone wrote this on the forums:
"xms 888 codec what can it play ?
________________________________________
Hi there,
Can anybody tell me what codec can the xms 888 play ? I am trying to play a xvid but the picture is really messy ie. the pixels are all over the place."

http://ausdivx.ms11.net/xms888/formats.htm I've read this but don't understand. Some of my flicks goes blurry too and i doubt its the subtitle file thats donig it. Also Apart from firmware can i upload codecs???

is firmware 1.2 the highest?
and if the subtitles get cut off when watchin eg. anime, is this the widescreen problem people were talking about?
i'm disappointed that it runs worse then the dvd player i got from crazy clarks which was extraodinarily cheap and can do everything. Good zoom, will xms-888 get good zoom soon?

LAST QUESTION I PROMISE: if i got a proper brand like ""pioneer"", does it do everything ? eg. perfect like a comp, read subtitles and plays anything??

I generally don’t reply to emails directly but rather encourage people to post their issues on the forums as this helps others that may come looking for answers, I don’t always get the time to answer them directly plus you will find a lot of helpful people will reply, you will get asked questions also which will help to identify the issues you may be experiencing. I did try replying to your earlier request via the forums however you have selected not to receive emails from the forums which made it hard, I was in China at the time with very limited internet access and didn’t really have the time. I suggest you download a copy of Gspot (google will turn it up straight away) and post the details of the files that are giving you troubles, you should also mention which version of the XMS888 you have, the earlier one had six red LED’s under the tray, the later one had a silver panel that covered the spot where the LED’s were on the earlier version, there are minor differences between the two versions so you will need to specify. Some of what you may be having trouble with may be limitations of the chipset, the 888 is based on an ESS chipset which does have somewhat limited file handling compared to newer machines. There will be no more firmware updates for the 888 so you won’t get any extra features above what you already have, if you post details about your files though you may get some insight into why you are having issues. Not all file types are supported by all players anyway, this is not brand specific, but is more chipset dependant than anything else. MediaTek chipsets are currently the best all round players although there is still variation amongst the models, the LG is considered a very good unit (way ahead of the Pioneer) the Zensonic has better firmware support and may have features more suited to your file types. Anime subtitle problems are very common, don’t be disappointed if you can’t get 100% results, it’s generally the files at fault.

um i believe the version of xms-888 is the silver panel one you mentioned.

as for g-spot i used it and the info is this :

4CC: Xvid
Name: Xvid
Bitrate: 965 kb/s
FPS: 23.976
Qf: 0.146 bits/pixel

Audio - Codec : 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
Bitrate: 129 kb/s (64/ch, stereo) VBR LAME3.96r¯
Fs: 48000 Hz

Streamtype: OpenDML AVI

IMRR: 1.00

If you need to know the movie is a xvid chinese movie with subtitles "forbidden city cop"

Also you mentioned mediatek is better chipset: what brand uses this, is this the LG you mentioned? are they expensive?

and howcome you can't just update firmware or codecs? as in wouldn't that limit alot of machines, and everytime something new comes out we need a new machine? I thought xms-888 came out when the xvid technology game out

Later versions of Xvid are a problem for the majority of players on the market, the default settings that are generally used cause problems, correctly encoded they can be fine with Xvid but many users do not change from the default settings when encoding. As the majority of these files originate from PC enthusiasts and there is no concern over the suitability of the file for hardware player compatibility problems can and will occur. The ESS chipset does not support QPEL or GMC, two settings which are commonly used, non square pixels can cause dramas also. You can't just update codecs, hardware players do not work like a PC. MediaTek based players will give much better results and handle a wider variety of file types but if you have poorly or incorrectly encoded files any player will struggle. LG or Zensonic players using MediaTek chipsets are available below $150, plenty of posts here about the models and their benefits. Depending on the files and how they are encoded they can sometimes be repaired to make them playable on hardware players, info has been posted previously. Some people re-encode files in another format however turning one compressed format into another compressed format often gives poor results. If you don't encode these files yourself and don't know their origin then you are at the mercy of others, not much you can do about it.

Mpeg 4 technology has been around a lot longer than the hardware players xms888 was one of the first/earlier commercially available players in Australia. Its not a bad unit considering what was on offer 18 months ago.

Now the problem you are having is with the OpenDML aspect of the AVI what happens is the xms has problems with the headers of the file so you actually need to remux the video and audio and run the file thru mpegmodifier and it will then work on the xms888.

You need to use avimux for the audio remux so that you can remove the opendml tags from the file and you then need to run the corrected file thru mpegmodifier as a final tidy-up.
