Hi Everybody,
For the last couple of days, I have been having trouble with my Austar
reception, quite a few channels have "stopped" giving me a "Please insert
smart card" message, including my favourite Fox8 and Discovery Channel.
I am using a current valid Austar card, BUT I have been using it in my own
receiver (Samsung 9500AY) for the last couple of years. I also receive FTA
crap from Optus B3 and also have a valid Optus Aurora card which still seems
to be working OK.
Has Austar/Foxtel been messing with the encryption recently??
Regards,
Michael.

This STB has from reading Google two in-built encryptions I think AND a Common Interface, in which you periodically are using your Spongebob (Austar card). The embedded encryptions are not the issue I'd suggest.
IF your using Irdeto CAM 2.06B OR a 2.09 Irdeto CAM then your card will increasingly, likely, give you an error message like 'error 0505-Invalid Card, this is eported on many CI decoders when using those two utterly hopeless CAMS.
You need to avoid these two CAMS, which however remain okay for Aurora till 2008 and use something better for Austar if so. A freecam 2.019 (not tried the later 2.20) or say an X Cam will do the job properly and is money better spent.
The CAM '2.06' WITHOUT the B, when allcammed, might also work for you.
Spongbobs if left in the provider box during an upgrade become unworkable in the 2.06B series and 2.09's.

My box is a European model with embedded Conax.
I'm using two Irdeto CAM's, one for Austar, one for Aurora, both are V2.09.
I'm new at this, can you please point me in the right direction to solve my
problem. I am in a country area with no access to sat equipment providers.
Where might I be able to obtain a suitable CAM??
Regards,
Michael.

If the issue is that your Austar card is no longer working in your
2.09 CAM then replace the CAM with say an Allcammed 2.06 (NOT the 'B'
type). Try this this unit from Hotchip in Sydney.
https://www.hotchip.com.au/OnlineStore/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=61
OR source an "X Cam" like this one seen at Ebay. Still sold, check Google or Sat TV forums for dealers.

Ensure though its not another issue like a dish slightly out of
alignment, check that signal strength and quality.
Regards.

Everything else is OK, as well as other MOST Austar channels. I'm having
trouble with Fox8 but not Fox8+2, Discovery doesn't work, neither does CNN.
This bugs me 'cause I watch Fox8 and Discovery quite often. I have had
issues before with fast channel changes bringing up a "Please insert smart
card" messsgae, but a switch off/switch on would fix it. If can be fixed by
a new CAM, I'm all for it.
I just wanna watch my Austar, I love the convenince of having one box for
all my Sat stuff. I really don't want to put my Austar box back in service
unless I really have to!
Regards,
Michael.
