Is there any independent Push To Talk Servers available that are not
locked into a network. Most of my friends now have PTT capable phones
but we are spread over different carriers.

PTT will be nothing more than a gimmick if it cannot be used across
different carriers.

It will be cross-carrier soon enough, keep your pants on

Not that I know of any, but you would be billed for data usage because you
would have to access any external PoC servers via the Internet.

Push to Talk,

Could be good, but with not every carrier offering yet and no cross carrier feature it bit of waste really.

Increasingly unlikely.

Take-up has been abysmal on the networks that offer it. Far less than with
SMS before that went cross-carrier.

I don't care about the data, I just want to be able to access a PTT
server that is not network dependent!

Apart from the cross-carrier issue, what about the cost? How much would
it cost to make a 30 sec. PTT call? Is there simply air time charges, or
do they also have a "flagfall" charge"? And is the cost of each call
borne by all participants? ie: I call you and Davo, presuming that I can
call more than one person at once, like a normal 2 way radio, do you and
Davo only pay to send, or do I pay for all of the call costs that arise
from a conversation between the 3 of us?

You clearly don't have access to the market info to which I am privy. Try
that of your own company for a start.

How much are you prepared to pay? Anyway, most of you probably have
Smart Phones so you can just run some voice app.

Treat it like data? but then the carriers won't be able to extort extra
money from you. Oh wait they already extort the money for using data
with a few exception. When the cost of data comes down (for the rest of use)

Ah, but will your phone cooperate and allow to change the port number
used for PTT. If not, the carriers can easily block the port.
